  • Do you like Max?

BYU fans, I'm curious, do you like Max as quarterback?

I was talking to an LDS gentleman today, and I asked him about the upcoming game. He soured immediately and said he's sworn off BYU football so long as Max is under center. He said he thinks Max is a lousy quarterback. I was kind of surprised by this. Is this a fairly common sentiment that I've just missed up til now? Or is this guy an aberration?

Did you remind him that Hall is a senior?

I'm a Max fan. He's not perfect but I can tell he loves to play and never counts himself or the team out. He's a very competitive guy and as long as he can channel that properly it will serve the team well.

It is a common sentiment from uneducated BYU fans (80% of the fan base). People have short memories, they seem to forget 70 tds and 8000 yards, all they remember are his performances against Utah and TCU last year. If Max has a good year and beats Utah all will be forgiven.

Personally I like Max. This year could make me love Max.

I love Max Hall as a QB. He disappointed me last year as I thought he would make bigger strides, but he has Detmeresque qualities, IMO. I expect him to have a huge senior season.

I'm not going to complain, with an OCC as a sophomore and 2 ten win seasons.

There really can't be much of a complaint.

Max is not my ideal quarterback, but I will not complain about what he's been able to do in his career. I would love to see him come up big in the big games. Right now, he seems to do the opposite. UCLA is an exception, however some would argue that that really wasn't a big game after all. But it was at the time.

I'm also put off by the stupid photos he let his wife convince him to take with Collie and Pitta.

lol. You're quite astute. He was totally hung up on the TCU game.

The guy is an ignorant aberration. A terrible QB doesn't get you a 21-5 record in a pass-heavy offense.

There were Ute fans booing Brian Johnson during the Oregon State game last year -- before the comeback -- so uneducated fans are not exclusive to BYU.

                        Maxpros:

He's a fiery competitor, he's gutsy, he's not afraid of a hit, one or two blindside hits seems to brush the cobwebs out and intensifies his focus and gets his competitive juices flowing, he's really good at managing the chip on his shoulder: he's at his best when he's the underdog, he's really good at leading a little platoon of men into battle, he has oodles of confidence.

                        Maxcons:

He's too cliquish, especially when the team is favored, he's a low passer, he doesn't have the little hairs at the back of his neck that signal a ferocious DE in his blindspot, he's not as effective at leading an entire army of men into battle, his reads are suspect, he locks on to targets.

You forgot to mention how he has to wind up by bringing the ball down to his waist to generate any zip on the ball. But perhaps you were including that in the "low passer" Maxcon.

I'm fairly ambivalent about Max. He has been surrounded by an embarrassment of riches on offense, and has used that to his benefit. I don't think he's up there with the BYU greats, but he has another season to get there. All in all, I'm happy to have him back for another year, and I look forward to seeing if he can make the leap.

To be fair, those performances against TCU and Utah were major stinkbombs.

And I agree that if he has a good year and beats TCU and Utah all will be forgiven and forgotten.

Bingo. I don't think he has the tools to be an outstanding QB.

yeah, he mentioned these two. But really what it came down to was that he blew the TCU game. I tried to point out that TCU had a top-five D, handed Oklahoma three of its first five sacks of the season, and only dropped games to two national title contenders, but he seemed unconvinced.
