  • Year two in the PAC-12: the Utah 2012 football thread

Projected strengths heading into the 2012 offseason:

-Defensive Line (it will be tough to replace Shelby, but Star returning for his senior season is massive)

-Receiver (Christopher headlines a young and talented bunch)

-Safety (their play was inconsistent in 2011, but the experience will make them much better in 2012)

-Running Back (with the departures of Chris Polk and LaMichael James, John White will be one of the most highly-touted RB's in the conference. The addition of Kelvin York, and another year of development for Harvey Langi, should help take the pressure off him)

-Tight End (The emergence of David Rolf is one more addition to the stable of capable tight ends, in addition to Dallin Rogers and Jake Murphy)

    Projected concerns:

-Quarterback (Chase Hansen and Travis Wilson being with the team for spring ball will be a huge help, but can Jordan Wynn stay healthy enough to fulfill his potential?)

-Fullback (Shawn Asiata proved to be a huge asset as the season wore on, and it will be a big task for Karl Williams to match his production)

-Offensive line (both starting tackles graduate, and this unit was a huge disappointment in the first half of 2011)

-Linebackers (a lot of guys saw time at the position because of heavy personnel rotation, but graduating seniors Chaz Walker and Matt Martinez racked up a ton of tackles)

The schedule will be reasonable, as they once again avoid Oregon and Stanford. They also get prohibitive P12 South favorites USC in Rice-Eccles. But Tempe and Seattle are difficult places to play; and Pasadena, Corvallis, Boulder, and even Logan will require every bit of focus and effort the Utes possess.

IMHO the biggest ? with Utah next year are the Assistants. Chow and Schramm are gone. Who does Utah hire? Do they promote Roderick to OC? what other position coach do they hire?

Offensive philosophy is a big concern. Do you go out and hire the best-possible OC regardless of preferred style? Do you continue the pro-style philosophy? Or do you hire Roderick and let him go back to the spread, with the assumption in mind that's where he's most comfortable?

I would assume the OC hire gets made this week, and depending on where the OC's specialty lies you hire a RB/TE coach after that.

You hire the best coordinator that has a pro-style philosophy.

There needs to be some kind of consistency. If not with coaching staff, then with philosophy.

Rolf replaces Asiata, imo. He can lay down the hammer and can catch the ball. Him at fullback and Rogers at TE is a good combo.

Roderick would seem to be a terrible idea. If you go spread, it's because you were able to attract a big spread name. They should really bring in somebody new.

              Great post/thread starter.

              Isn't York a power back?

Yes. York is considered to be a big, power back.

                  agreed.

I don't think Utah could win consistently in this conference with a spread offense. Oregon can get away with it, because they are bringing in 3 or 4 athletes that Utah isn't able to get. I loved Chow's system and thought his play calling was excellent. I expect that to suffer somewhat next year.

Here is my early season prediction for the Utah Crimson Classless (or whatever our nickname will be by then) in the PAC-12 next year:

                  Win vs. Arizona
Loss @ Arizona St (Arizona St. plays well at home and there is talent disparity)
                  ??? vs. California (toss up)
Win @ Colorado (rivalry pay back, Whitt will make sure to extract revenge)
                  Win vs. Oregon St
                  Loss @ Washington
                  Win vs. Washington St
Win @ UCLA (it's going to take a couple years to straighten UCLA out)
Loss vs. USC (too much talent disparity, especially with Barkley back)

I think Utah goes 6-3/5-4 in the conference next year. Utah does get the benefit of the 5 PAC-12 home games next year. Probably not enought to win the South, but close.

We have a very senior laden team returning next season, esp on offense.

QB: Wynn, Jr. All significant chances of having an exceptional year revolve around his health

RB: White IV, Sr. York or Langi will back up.

FB: Open. I would like to see Rolf here

TE: Rogers, Sr. Best TE on the team last year. Hopefully he makes a full recovery. Moeai needs to block to see the field more. Murphy is the future, but his touches probably go down next year.

WR: Christopher, Sr. With a healthy Wynn he will be on an All conference team next year

WR: Dunn, Sr. Dunn will split time with Anderson

                    C: Stevens, Sr.

LG: Mason, Sr. I think he stays inside next season

RG: Vyncent Jones, Jr. Played very well the 4th quarter of the Sun Bowl. He allows us to shift Brenner out to tackle

RT: Brenner, Sr. Played on the right side all season. I don't think he has the skill to play the left side

LT: Biggest question mark on offense, IMO

So 8 returning starters(9 if you count Rolf's starts the end of the year) with 7 seniors.

                    On defense

                    DE: Joe Kruger, Jr

                    NG: Lotulelei, Sr.

                    DT: Dave Kruger, Sr.

                    DE: Open

                    MLB: Trevor Reilly, Jr.

                    WLB: Blechen, Jr.

SLB: Anderson, Sr. If he is recovered, otherwise, wide open

                    FS: Rowe, So.

SS: Open. My money is on Terrell Reese. Chappious could play against more run heavy teams.

                    CB: Lacy, Sr.

                    CB: Lee, Sr.

8 returning starters, with 5 seniors projected.

Anyone know when the PAC-12 releases their schedule? Figured that if the SEC has already done so, the PAC-12 can't be too far behind. Interested to see what the 3rd OOC game is, maybe Southern Utah will sign-up to be the FCS opponent.

My only concerns are that we are unsettled at the 2 most important positions on offense (QB, LT), and I think we will have the same concerns about linebacker that we had about he secondary coming into this season. I am not sold on Blechen at LB. I think he freelances to much for the position, but he just doesn't have the footspeed to consistently play SS in the Pac-12. The secondary is going to be tough next year and the D-Line will be the anchor again.

Next year has a chance to be a great season. . Even with the concerns at QB, we should be the preseason #2 in the South next year. ASU is a trainwreck right now, UofA lost the heart of their offense, Colorado will be green at QB and on defense, and UCLA will find a way to shoot themselves in the foot(as usual).

Unfortunately, Barkley's decision to return curbs any enthusiasm of playing in the CCG. I don't think we have the talent to beat them right now, and I doubt that they will be overlooking what on paper would appear to be their only competition in the South.

They might be working on big10 game per the announcment last week. If they can't work that out then suu would be a good replacement.
