  • BYU-Utah conflation junction

Have you personally ever met a college educated (to satisfy SU's, "you'd have to be illiterate and live in a closet and with an IQ of below mentally retarded" criteria) individual who confused the university of Utah with the University of Brigham?

To be fair, if you asked anybody with an IQ over 80 to answer this question:

T/F: Brigham Young University and The University of Utah are the same institution.

I'm pretty sure everybody would know that's false. It's more the general concept that these are both schools in Utah with a lot of Mormons and people get them confused. For example this brings to mind a friend from Tennessee who tried to argue with me that Kevin Dyson played at BYU even after I corrected him that he was a Ute.

Sure that's not conflating the schools, but the fact is that football success anywhere in the state helps all the schools in the state.

People really don't know much about Utah as a state or its college teams.

After USU almost beat Auburn this year, Collin Cowherd said something like "Utah State has only been in the FBS for what, 5 years?"

Uhh.. didn't Merlin Olsen have USU ranked in the top ten nationally? No reason Collin Cowherd would know that of course, but really even most sports fans don't pay attention to Utah, BYU, or USU.

I have to agree with this.

            This doesn't surprise me.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

My experience after living outside Utah for a long time has been that for many people the state of Utah, its institutions, and Mormonism are one big undifferentiated mass. Over time this may change.

I would submit what happened with your friend happens with a lot of states.

In my experience, people conflate Utah and BYU all the time. Especially here on the east coast. I think I even shared the story of a phone interview I had for my current job.

Interviewer: (Reviewing my resume) Hey you went to BYU are you a Steelers fan by chance? I am a huge Steelers fan. What's his name, Fuamatu-Ma'afala was there the same time you were, no? I love saying that name.

Me: Uh, sorry I'm a Raiders fan. I saw him play but Ma'afala went to Utah. BYU's rival. BYU is where Chris Hoke and Brett Kiesel went to school.

Interviewer: Oh yeah, I love those guys.

Bonus points if you can name the city each of these university's are located without looking. Add Montana and Montana State on your list.

No, but everyone I meet conflates Utah (be it UofU or the state) with mormon.
