  • Would a football tourney be as popular?

I was thinking about this last week at the MWC basketball tourney. While clearly football is America's most popular spectator sport right now, I don't think that an NCAA football tournament would translate as well in tournament format.

Part of what makes the NCAA and conf tourneys so great IMO is that there is a constant flow of games, which greatly increases the chances of great games and thrilling finishes. Then the teams that won those fantastic games turn around and play again 2 or 1 day(s) later depending on the tourney.

Unless you are ranked lower than 8 when the bracket comes out.

I don't think it would supplant the excitement of March Madness, but it would be amazing. Much better than the contrived BCS system.

12 teams in the playoffs, keep the little bowls. Perfect.

It would be every bit as popular as Wild Card weekend in the NFL. Aside from the first weekend of march Madness, that's my favorite weekend in sports.

Cowherd asked Mussberger (sp?) this very question yesterday (may be what got you thinking) and MB brought up a good point about how important the regular season was in football vs basketball and how he didn't want to see that change as it had in basketball. He went on so say how he could see a scenario where the top 8 in football could play but thought it would just lead to a larger and larger field which would further reduce the importance of the regular season. Ended by saying he thought basketball had a pretty unique product and he hoped it didn't happen. (All this is obviously FWIW)

So, regular season in basketball isn't important? Lame argument all around.

Yes, but they won't win the NCAA title.

Regular season is just as exciting even with a playoff. Football would be the same.

I thought the argument for the greatness of the NCAA tourney was that everyone had a shot to win. If we are only worried about the 10-20 schools that have a chance to win the title every year why not just have a 16 team NCAA basketball tourney and 4-6 team football tourney?

imo a sixteen team tourney that started on Thanksgiving with two games 3 games on the friday and 3 games on the saturday would get huge ratings and be exciting as hell. 9 Autos and 7 wild cards (the four lowest ranked champs from the MAC, sun belt, wac, conf usa and mwc would play for 2 spots

Meh. I agree that everyone has a shot to win, but most do not. I consider a team like Marquette getting in akin to getting an average bowl game in football. It's just a nice reward for an average season.

A playoff that involves teams from lesser conferences will not be a ratings bonanza. Make it top 12, top two max from each conference, unless you're in the top eight with a win against one of your two conference mates ahead of you in the BCS standings (like Texas Tech would have been in 2008). Incorporate byes, home-field and re-seed teams as to preserve the significance of the regular season.

Also, there's no way the university presidents would sign off on a plan that begins in Thanksgiving. The 12-game regular season has to be protected, because cutting it would take away home games -- the gate being the bread-and-butter of smaller schools and the communities that they play in, and money that would likely not be recouped through huge TV money for a playoff. That 12th game is the Holy of Holies for ADs.

The reg season in Bball only seems diminished because there are so many games. There is no way the regular season in football is diminished when the season is only 12 games long. You lose, you probably miss the playoffs.
