  • Dr. Hill on the radio

I heard an interview on the radio this morning with him, and for the most part, it was the same-old same-old, but a tidbit caught my attention:

The Utes will not receive any money from either the PAC-1X or the MWC during the first year of play in the PAC-1X. He said that Utah made that concession to get to play in 2011 because we "had to get out of the Mountain West before that". The way he said it really conveyed the urgency of the situation.

It was really kind of odd. It really puts a stretch on the ol 2011 budget for the Wizard On The Hill. :yikes:

I remember reading somewhere that the PAC-10 was willing to help with budget shortfalls(up to a point) that Utah may incur in 2011. Utah is in a much better financial situation than CU entering into the new conference, which is why CU will receive full financial benefit(likely to help pay their B-XII buyout) upon entry.

I do agree that it shows how motivated Hill was to not miss the gravy train in college athletics.

What is interesting about all of this is Utah is on a three year ramp up on its revenue share from the Pac-10+2 but Colorado gets its full share on year-one:

Colorado was invited to become an immediate full-revenue sharing partner in the Pac-10. Utah was not.

Utah, which will join the Pac-10 in 2011, agreed to a three-year timetable before it earns a full-revenue share.

        It's probably anti-Mormon bigotry.

For that reason alone, I expect Utah to be on the right side of a 5/4 split in conference games in 2011. Even moreso when we're on the wrong side of a 1/2 split in non-conference games.

This is odd to me. Why would there be urgency to jump from the MWC in 2011, particularly when CU won't be joining at the same time (btw, is this still correct?)? Why would the PAC require Utah to "get here ASAP" and why would Utah be so eager to leave, especially since it means they aren't getting a full pay-day from the league yet. Is a 1/3 share of PAC money more than a full share of MWC money?

I can't speak about the rest, but the bolded is a no brainer.

What is the wrong side of the conference split?

I have heard that the Oregon game already scheduled for SLC will remain just as a conf game.

4 home/5 road vs. the good side 5 home/4 road

Do you have the numbers handy? If its as much of a no-brainer as you say, then Jarid's comment (or whoever it was) that the budget might take a hit in the first year is wrong. If anything, they would have a surplus.

Utah will play 2011 without any funding from the Pac-12 or the MWC. 2012 will be 1/3 payout, 2013 2/3 payout, and 2014 full share member.

The real budget issue year is 2011.

I guess I misread his second statement, I thought he was talking about which division Utah was going to be in.

Okay, well then we're back to the main issue. Why leave now, unless of course the PAC is demanding the Utes come immediately? I can't see any real benefit to the PAC to add one team in 2011, and one team in 2012. Is the MWC kicking them out? That seems unlikely.
