  • The Ute in me says BYU can rot in non-BCS purgatory

If BYU were to become another Utah State, that couldn't help but benefit Utah.

The college football/sports fan part of me is far more sensible, and realizes BYU has a lot to offer to any conference. One cannot deny the baggage it carries, but I don't believe it's insurmountable baggage.

I would make BYU no worse than a 2-1 underdog to eventually become a member of the Big 12. I would make the Big 12 a bigger favorite than even money to eventually expand and get back to 12 teams. Five years from now, however, if nothing's changed, those odds become longer, IMO, and BYU has less to offer than it currently does. We'll have to see how Utah exploits the gap in status that will exist when it starts playing in the Pac-10 to know what damages BYU could incur.

I think a strong BYU is a great motivator for Utah. You thought 2002-04 was bad, that pales in comparison to how the shoe was on the other foot in the mid-70s and stretches of the 1980s. That alone was motivation to for Utah to really work toward strengthening its football program.

I would never say I want BYU in the Big 12, but I would never say that if such a bid comes, that it is undeserving of such status. Keep doing what you're doing, and at the very worst, you'll be heavily mentioned and considered in any expansion talk -- a clear step up from this go-round of expansion.

I could change my mind on that. There's so much unknown about how Utah will be strengthened by the Pac-10 as it pertains to BYU's future. Maybe there's no difference at all, outside of more $$$ and opportunity.

In five years, BYU being in the Big 12 might not mean anything. In five years, maybe it gets you off life support. In five years, maybe Utah's won a Rose Bowl or contended for a NC, and our dislike of anything BYU completely dissolves.

I will say this -- chief at the top of my reasons for wanting to keep BYU in non-AQ purgatory however would be to spite f-----g douchebag Zoobs like Flystripper.

Funny you call me, an ex mo, with family in the Crimson club that has attended every Utah / BYU game wile sitting with the Utes, a Zoob....This "Zoob" will be attending your team's contest in South Bend this year. Yep I fit the profile of your typical zoob. But all of that does not change the fact that you are a fucking douche.

To be fair, I should get at least a "u" and a "c" worth of your indictment.

Wow. If I ever get to the point in life that KL (one of the nicest people online) is calling me out, I would seriously consider professional help. The only thing worse is if LA started quoting Pulp Fiction instead of TPB in referencing me...

Because the overwhelming beneficiary of BYU on a downward trajectory is Utah. I don't think anyone has to be a douche to see that. I think there are logical reasons to wish BYU ill if you are a Utah fan and the reverse is true as well. I think what would be lost in the rivalry would be more than made up for in the windfall Utah would reap if BYU became USU. I don't wish that on BYU because of all my friends and family that are fans. I also think college football would lose part of its tradition. Lots of people want to see ND suck forever, for example. Not me.

Did anyone else truly laugh out loud.. And then the other part of me was fairly pissed that this is now a real option for Utah...

The rivalry is good for both Utah and BYU. I want to see the rivalry remain strong and BYU moving to the Big 12 will help keep the rivalry strong. The ideal situation for me is BYU is just slightly worse than the Utes and we play every year in football and 2 times per year in hoops.

Of course, I'm just another arrogant CUF Ute fan puffing out my chest and gloating about our move to the PAC-12.
