What is going on wrt USC?

Please don't hire Jeff Fischer, it would make my old renditions of "Luv ya blue" to be oh so blue!

He already said no (too much cash at 10essee).

    Mike Riley has said no.

Reports are that Pete is taking His OC, his o-line coach, and linebackers coach (Ken Norton) with him to Seattle.

He will meet with the team today at Heritage and my friend that works on campus said that they already have sealed off the area around Heritage Hall because too many media members were camping out and it was going to create a problem today as kids tried to get to and from classes.

Names that keep coming up: Jack del Rio, Herm Edwards, a few mentions of Mike Leach. I posted last night, but Scott Wolf was on TV and confirmed that Whit and Patterson have both indicated that they would like to interview for the gig. I think there are probably quite a few people that would like the job.

This sort of thing will kill the recruiting class but I am hoping it will strengthen the resolve of a talented core of players currently on the team. When Schnellenberger left the Hurricanes, everyone thought that was the end of that. We all know what happened next.

If not, well, that was a nice 9 year dynasty of dominance. College football is cyclical and perhaps now is the time for SC to down-slide for a few years.

THE SOUTH CENTRAL SHALL RISE AGAIN!!!!

And btw, if anyone has SipiTau's bat signal, time to throw that thing up into the night sky. That is one guy who will have something interesting to say, I am sure.

Since Kyle Whittingham's only goal with respect to being a head college football coach is to take down the BYU mystique, he will probably take the job at USC. Since he is unable to recruit all the good mormons to SLC against BYU, it is his only recourse to accomplish his singular goal. With the SC name he will take every good kid from the state of Utah and then BYU will suck!

I accept his white flag. Bronco is clearly too much for him.

Would SC fans like Whit? Are most as clued into college football like Whit's biggest fan on this venue?

Whit would not be a fanfare pick by any means, no. He has zero ties to the program, has zero ties to California football, and comes from a mid-major.

He definitely would be respected based on what he has accomplished at Utah. But the boards are not overly excited about him (they arent totally down on him, either). I would say the same thing about Bronco, too, so this isn't a jab at Utah.

This is U to the freaking SC. Winning the SUGAR BOWL isn't going to impress anyone enough to offer up their Nephite daughters as an offering to placate the Lamanite SC football players. However, it is definitely a start.

I don't want Whit to coach SC. I also wouldn't want Bronco to coach SC. SC needs a big name.

There certainly is a lot of talk about USC getting the boom lowered on it. It makes one wonder what coach is going to want to step into that situation. USC can recover but it might be in trouble for a couple years.

I think a lot of coaches will:

                  1. SC has deep pockets
                  2. Expectations will be lower if there are sanctions

                  Obvious downside

                  1. Never be the guy that follows a legend

Ousting Pete will mitigate the severity of any sanctions, if at all. This was my theory all along and I still believe it to be the case. Pete was the burnt offering in an effort to keep the championships and the Heisman.

How about Steve Mariucci or Jon Gruden? I know Gruden likes his TV gig, but he will eventually coach again. Does he want to coach in the pros again or does he want to give college a try?

Mariucci coached at Cal and knows the college game.

How about John Harbaugh out of Stanford?

Maybe all these guys are scared of sanctions and maybe USC thinks they should hire a sacraficial lamb with the hopes of getting a premium coach in a couple years?
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Ute fans with ties to the program.....what do you hear this morning?

My friend on campus texted me. The K-Whit rumors are heating up......I think they are going to talk to him. His current contract is what.....around 6M? They could cut a check for that in the blink of an eye.

Does anyone have any inside scoopage up on the hill? This could be a VERY interesting week, folks.

absolutely. If you're successful, you're a god; if not, you can blame it on all the mistakes made by the previous administration.

K Whit would be a great choice. Brian Kelly plus plus plus. Riley has turned USC down but USC fans aren't excited about Whit? Who is 3D trying to kid?

I think Florida and probably Notre Damewould be a questionable fit for Whit. There's a huge cultural chasm between Gainsville or South Bend and Salt Lake City; he'd need to reestablish recruiting ties, etc. (though a monkey could recruit to Florida or ND). Not USC. USC would be a great fit.

3D, your comparison between Whit and Bronco is absurd.

I'm hearing that Norm Chow is at the top of the list.
