  • The "defend your fandom" thread

Following Triplet's lead, everyone must now defend their fandom or face ridicule.

Why are you a fan of either BYU or Utah?

    1. I'm the third of three generations of BYU students in my family
    2. Attended BYU
    3. All four of my siblings attended BYU
    4. Met wife at BYU
    5. Lived with BYU football players
    6. All my relatives that went to the UofU were really whiny and annoying
Everything in life is an approximation.

      1. All four grandparents attended BYU and my paternal grandfather taught there for years.

      2. Both parents attended BYU.

      3. I attended BYU.

      4. The only person in my entire extended family who is a Ute fan is a cousin who recently purchased this:

from the local Deseret Industries. He has no children.

      5. I have been to almost every BYU home game since 2000. I will be driving 300 miles to attend the game Saturday.

        Interesting.

Neither of my parents really went to college. My mom had 1 year at USU before she dropped out and got married. My dad went to a trade school, but it was in Provo (essentially, he went to the forerunner of UVU - Trade Tech!)

My dad took me to several BYU games when I was younger. We didn't have season tickets, but I think we must have had friends that did. After about 10 or so, we stopped going, but I kept watching the games on t.v. My dad is a "all inclusive" sports fan. He basically roots for all the Utah schools and teams.

In elementary school, we always got up for rivalry week. Kids would come decked out in their team's gear on Friday before the game. There was even smack talk between 11 year olds. Funny.

When it came time to choose a college, I planned on going to the U. It was closer and my sister went there. Football wasn't really a thought. My best friend (non-local, Donut) convinced me to be his roommate at BYU so I applied. In fact, I didn't apply to any other school, not even the U. Glad I got in . I went to every home game my Freshman year, and tons of b-ball games. Volleyball games too. That pretty much cemented it.

I went to the U for law school, but my loyalties were set by then. I didn't mind seeing the U do well in 2003, however. Local boy makes good and all.
Ain't it like most people, I'm no different. We love to talk on things we don't know about.

My parents were baptized when I was 5. 2 years later my dad took me down to the church to shoot some hoops. I was 7 and running around the church, when I hear a bunch of screaming and yelling, I open the door and see about 30 people huddled around the TV watching BYU on the church sattelite. I was hooked.

This was the same time that I decided I did not want to be a front runner fan, so I picked all of my sports allegiances that day. Miami Dolphins, San Antonio Spurs, San Francisco Giants, and BYU Cougars. I have never wavered.

Let me add that I did not watch my first BYU game in person until 1996, BYU vs Air Force. I have only missed about 4 home games since then.

I have no real ties to BYU through my parents. My parents are both converts (started missionary discussions in Germany and finally got baptized 7 years later in Connecticut) and moved to Utah when I was young. I think my dad just decided to adopt BYU as his school and I was a fan from as far back as I can remember. I remember huddling around the radio listening to broadcasts back in the 80's. I was 7 when they won the championship and I still remember being so excited. All 4 of my older sisters went to BYU and I followed suit.

I'm a Ute fan because I hate the LDS church and being a Ute fan gives me the chance to air my hatred and bigotry towards BYU and the LDS church.

Also, I prefer watching the Utes because you can buy a beer in RES but can't at LES.

Went to BYU, but preferred USU and Utah, where I also went to school.

BYU started winning in the seventies and I liked their style of play.

Became a season ticket holder in 1977 and a huge fan of Lavelle and the recognition he brought the church through putting winning teams on the field.

Joined the CC at a higher level so they would have the support to move the program to a higher level.

I find it odd that the Ute fans who have posted in this thread have chosen to resort to lies.

                      That is unfortunate.

You were 7 when BYU won the championship and now you live in an old-folks home. It's been that long.

Seems I spelled it good enough for you to know who I was talking about.

While you couldn't have paid me enough to spend any significant time at the BYU, both of my parents graduated from there and I've been a diehard fan of BYU football and basketball since I became a sports fan in the early 80s.
                            I'm like LeBron James.

I grew up going to Utah games. I've sat on the cement that used to be in north end zone. I've worn my football jersey as a little leaguer (you got in free) and played football in the south end zone during halftime (Before the renovation there was grass behind the south end zone stands). My only goal during high school football was to be able to play on the "turf" up in Rice stadium. I went to the two Freedom Bowls in the early nineties with friends when I was in high school (Solon was there too). I would have been at the copper bowl in 1992 but tooblue had to get married in Canada so me, my brother and my father watched the game from bowling alley in buffalo NY.

I've also loved Utah basketball for ever. I was at the "king of the fing hill". I was at the Utah game where there was mouse released. I still count as one of the greatest moments of my life was when Utah beat byu in Provo in 1998 (basketball).

I also got my undergrad at Utah and I usually get out to one or two football games a year and One or two basketball games a year.
