I really am having a hard time following you. "Too many problems" on offense? Really? I see a team that really only needs to figure out what to do on the goaline and eliminate turnovers. Aside from those problems, this offense looks to be VERY talented and explosive. I have to think that after two weeks of goalline problems, KW will get plenty antsy and we'll see some changes. Turnovers are tough. I think Peel's was awful. The one that Asiata had was a great hit...helmet right on the ball. YOu could have nearly called that defensive player for spearing. It would be hard for anyone to hold onto that ball with the way the helmet hit it.Originally posted by UtahDan View Post
Still think we are probably a 4 loss team, maybe as few as three. Maybe. Just too many problems on offense and a (so far) poor kicker.
Anyway, what floors me is that you single out the offense but say nothign of the defense. The defense gave up two HUGE plays against USU. The defense gave up 4 or 5 passing plays last night of over 30 yards. The defensive line is not getting pressure on opposing QBs.
I'm more concerned, quite frankly, about the defense than I am the offense. I think Cain is doing more than most Utah or BYU fans would have expected. He's managing the games, not turning the ball over, running VERY well, and is getting the ball to playmakers like Asiata, Reed and Brooks.
I can't do anything but agree with you regarding the place kicking. It sucks no matter how you look at it.

I thought the long pass plays were more a matter of a perfectly thrown ball and a receiver having a lights out night catching everything that came his way.
The defenders were generally in as good a position as you can ask for and were making hits as the ball was caught.
I would agree that they needed more pressure on the QB.
But I don't think this means Utah is in trouble. I don't think this changes things much and still see Utah as one of the top three in the MWC. I would assume that people who are upset are the folks who had their expectations go up after the USU game. Wasn't Utah voted 3rd in the MWC pre-season? I think that is about where they are at.
I mean - you could be CSU - excited that a fumbled snap kept you from losing to Weber St.

Plus:
- Kyle always finds a way to win ugly.
- Utah always gets better through the season, and is playing their best football during the post season.
- The Defense is still pretty good
- Ludwig was undisciplined and didnt stick to a game plan (like Crowton). However, one thing he had going for him was his ability to continually draw up offensive plays to take advantage of the abilities of his players, which made them better and the team better. The best combination was Ludwig scheming the week before the game, combined with BJ actually calling plays during the game. That way you get Ludwig's creativity without his impulsively destructive play calling during the game.
Minus:
- Schramm doesnt have Ludwig's creative mind. (And I dont mean during the game, I mean scheming for the game). By now, Ludwig would have drawn up new plays for both Brooks and III.
- They're using Asiata too much, which will lead to an injury very very soon, if he doesn't have one now.
- Cain has a curious combination of happy feet and a stubborn refusal to leave the pocket. Weird to see him dancing around in there without taking off. It will be interesting to see where this gets him.

I don't think Utah is a double-digit win type of team this year, but we catch some serious breaks with our September schedule this year. Oregon is down; Louisville isn't quite Colorado bad, but they're close; and neither the Ags nor the Spartans will make a bowl game.
Throw in Colorado St after a bye (Whit's 4-0; 8-0 if you include bowl games), and Utah could be a deceptive 5-0 heading into Vegas."I don't know the origin of said bitch booming."-Art Vandelay

I guess everything is relative. I never got the sense that SJSU threatened Utah, even in the second half. Maybe it was Utah's amazing defense. Or perhaps SJSU is just not a very good football team.Originally posted by Portland Ute View PostNone of it was good? You weren't impressed by Cain's running ability? Or the effectiveness of the option? Or Jereme Brooks? How about the depth of our running game? How about the rushing defense?
How about not blowing a game that had all the indicators of a game that would be blown? Were you honestly NOT thinking that "this is one of those games?" By midway through the 3rd when nothing really seemed to be going well for the Utes and SJSU had momentum and was hanging around, it sure felt like this was going to be one of those head scratching losses.
Nope, the Utes found a way to a win by double digits a game which in the past they most likely would have found a way to lost...
Wow.
Nothing good at all.
You and mp ought to get together. You'd enjoy each other's negativity.
But a win a so much better than a loss. This one is in the past and on the books. It will matter little in a few weeks.Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

SJSU had one of the worst offenses in the nation last year, and that apparently hasn't changed this year. I think they're even worse than Tulane on offense.

That's a good point. And, as I've mentioned in this thread, those turnovers came at such critical points. IF Asiata doesn't fumble and Utah takes it in for a 14-0 lead, it could've been a different ball game. But he did and it was what it was so, on to the Ducks.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostI guess everything is relative. I never got the sense that SJSU threatened Utah, even in the second half. Well, because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Pretty much how I felt from what I watched. It was ugly. Katy Lied made great points. Cain needs to get out of the pocket. He had lots of lanes and could have ran wild on them. If Utah takes care of the ball and converts on special teams that game is BYU-Tulane ugly IMO. In fact I think the win is only soured in light of BYU's drubbing and what USC did to SJSU the previous week.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostI guess everything is relative. Both. I felt the same way. When it was 7-7 at the beginning of the 4th, I texted my friend saying that the Utes only needed one score to win. The only score SJSU had up to that point was off of a short field turnover.Originally posted by myboynoah View PostI guess everything is relative. Course, I was proven wrong, but the point remains that Utah's D was looking stellar up to that point. Whether it was because they were stellar or because SJSU sucked has yet to be determined.
I suspect a bit of both. They certainly couldn't run it against the Utes, but was able to move the ball through the air. So, while I was nervous, I felt pretty confident that we weren't going to lose the game.
Which, honestly, is an odd feeling to have about Utah football. I'm not exactly certain when that happened.

Oregon already rolled Utah once this week, I see no reason not to expect a second helping of Ute.
