All I care about are the corners...

Last year's defensive abomination was the direct result of having to play corners that had no business being on a JUCO field let alone a top 25 Div I college team. They were a huge liability and limited what the rest of the defense could do.

With corners, you can play a nickel or a dime coverage. With corners you can run all sorts of blitz packages and tell the pass-rushing defenders to get to the QB at all costs.

And when you have corners AND a defensive pass rush, lookout...

How good our total D will be is yet to be seen. Bit it LOOKS as if we'll be dramatically improved at corner. That is, in and of itself, a very good sign...

The problem is the corners get hurt every 20 minutes in practice. I'm sure the only reason why we have so many injuries at CB this fall is because the coaches had the audacity to sign a bunch of JUCO guys for depth.

The football gods would have nothing to do with that blaphemous move and has stricken them all accordingly.

I like to think the CBs are mysteriously coming up lame when they find out they have been bumped up the depth chart and will be starting against OU.

I'm not nearly as concerned about corners as I am the O-Line. A team is no better than it's O-Line, period. With a good line, the offense can control the ball and the clock, wearing the other team down, and keeping the other offense off the field and out of sync. I submit Nebraska's 94-95 team as evidence.

My prediction is that there's better than a 50/50 chance 2 or more of our 7 OL will get hurt in the OU game. Andrew George will spend time at RT.

Last year's defensive abomination was much more the result of lackluster play at NT and less than lackluster play at ILB. This issue was compounded with the even less than less than lackluster play at safety. Knowing up the middle BYU would experience more penetration than a Jemma Jameson 120 minute "Bootyfest," the coaches reacted by playing the DEs more inside and asking them to occupy interior OL while still covering the edge. This had a huge impact on BYU's ability to rush the passer. While BYU's CB play was nothing to write home about, if the safeties and ILBs, as well as NTs to a lesser extent, were at the level BYU normally has I still believe the CBs were adequate for BYU to have had as good a defense as it had in 2006 or 2007. I think that the BYU coaches believe that BYU's defensive system must seek to be as good as it can be knowing that the CB situation is likely to reflect last year frequently in the future. Hence, the complex zone schemes that demand players knowing exactly where they should be. Perhaps this season BYU will have more athleticism and be able to take more chances, I hear that occasionally with BYU and then when the dust settles it is not always the case. My guess is if the defense ends up being above average it will be because the kids are always in the right place and BYU executes well.

Is BYU really only traveling 7 o lineman?

Yep Bronco said if they do travel 8, Fono Vakalahi will be the eighth, but most likely only 7.

Why only 7? May be a stupid question, but it seems like you're only two rolled ankles and a leg cramp away from some real ugliness.

The writing is already on the wall, thanks to fall camp. Injuries are going to boofoo BYU into oblivion this year. We are going to have Gaskins handing off to Trent Lamb and Scott Johnson and Steven Thomas playing corner by the end of the season.
