  • Bronco's premature/delayed/swallowed whistles

interesting note at the end of the interview. Bronco confesses to deliberately whistling plays dead earlier / later / not at all during scrimmage in order to mess with his team's mental focus. He said he is trying to teach them poise, to acknowledge that the last call may have been wrong or unfair, but to gather their focus back up and move to the next play. He said that Max makes his displeasure at early whistle sacks plain for everyone to see, and Jan Jorgensen feels he gets denied his 15 sacks per scrimmage with mistimed whistles.

Bronco says the more they focus on lost opportunities, the more he leans on them with unfair whistles. He wants them to become more businesslike, and to scheme from wherever they find themselves.

Interestingly, Bronco says he also mistimes his whistles for his coaches, to teach them to move past bad calls and on to the next play.

I wish at times BYU were more football-like and less businesslike. Perhaps they would be more motivated when the TCU's and Utah's show up for a game. Look at the current crop of successful football coaches and which ones are more businesslike vs. football oriented.

I agree. I can't stand how TCU and Utah have dominated BYU over the past 4 years.

Exactly. A business like approach might work when you are dealing with more mature kids in their mid 20s but not with 18-20 year olds. Or Jews.

Oh, come one, Goat, you know that for the true fan, neither the Cougs nor the Utes can ever lose to the rival. 2-2 over 4 years is awful.

I don't know about "business-like", but I'm OK with players and coaches being able to get beyond bad calls. If there is an added benefit of players recognizing that when the whistle blows it is time to stop and there are fewer personal fouls for late hits, I can live with that too.

I suppose I find myself in the middle of wanting players to have emotion, but not letting it rule them. Emotion only carries you so far. And it results in doing stupid things like getting too up for Wyoming and onside kicking when you are ahead by a bunch. It also allows you to not get up enough, which can cause you to lose to UNLV when they are bad.

Just a couple of examples that stand out.

On the other hand, if you don't have any emotion at all then you get what BYU got through the second half of last year - in which they decided football wasn't "fun" anymore. Which lead to an emotionless no-show at the Vegas Bowl for most of the team.

This seems like it might increase the injury risk. When you are expecting people to ease up and they don't or you need to ease up unexpectedly seems like a recipe for increased injury.

Yep, that's pretty good smack about games that were played two years ago.

Well, it's no more selective memory than exUte's comments about BYU vs TCU and Utah.

The well for UteSmack source material from last year is bone dry.

Bronco did that a lot in practice yesterday, Max was very upset. Also one thing I loved to see yesterday was when the defense stopped the offense during one of the drives, Jan was in Max face and they were jawing back and forth. I like to see passion.

Mormons are the only ones who include the word "passion" when discussing anything premature!

Glad to hear that. I was thinking that if the players know the whistle is blown incorrectly, they would not get upset knowing it was just part of the deal. Sounds like they are intense enough that even knowing that, they still get ticked. Sounds good to me.
