  • USC has their own Tim Tebow!

The hype is beginning to ramp up for Matt Barkley. Mel Kiper already has him slotted as the #1 pick in the 2012 draft. Apparently the kid started as a freshman at Mater Dei and was calling his own plays by his sophomore year.

One has to wonder whether the Corp injury will end up being fortuitous for USC in the end.

Here's a little blurb about Barkley at the end of his wikipedia entry:

"Barkley is a devout Christian and attends a nondenominational congregation; he plays acoustic guitar with a church youth group. His father, Les, co-owns an insurance business with his brother in-law. While he was a student at Mater Dei, Barkley's parents started the Monarchs for Marines (M4M) campaign, where hundreds of Mater Dei students, coaches and parents volunteered to landscape and renovate youth areas on nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. Barkley had a 3.77 GPA in high school, and frequently speaks to young students about the importance of staying on top of school work.[22] His cousin, Robbie Boyer, is a walk-on at USC.[8] During his Christmas holiday in 2008, Barkley went with a group of friends and family to help run an orphanage in South Africa."

I found other items from the wikipedia entry to be disturbing- most notably the the parellels between Todd Marijuanavich and Barkley.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Im a Barkley fan. He doesnt bug me as much as Tebow does. He has a monster arm, and I think if it were up to the players, he would have won the QB derby straight up. Not that I think players are the best judges, but you tell me how many freshman QBs inspire the kind of fealty I am seeing from the upper classmen.

Right after Corp was named starter, the players were interviewed about their new QB. Usually thats when everyone gathers around and supports the coach's choice, even if they privately disagreed with it. I was surprised at how many on-the-record quotes by RBs and WRs waxed enthusiastic about Barkley despite Corp getting the job. Not as excited about Corp. These were JR and SR starters saying this.

Sorry, I dont have the link.

Everyone is excited about Barkley because he is a highly regarded recruit. I don't recall anyone hinting that they would have preferred him over Corp. Not even remotely.

I doubt the upper classmen want a true freshman under center when they go into the Shoe in 4 weeks. Look what happened to Pryor when he showed up as a Freshman at the Coliseum. Didn't go so well for the Luckeyes.

btw, at this morning's 7 on 7, Barkley threw 3 picks, 2 of them in the end zone.

not sure how stoked everyone is right now on him. He is trying to force too many passes and still struggles to read the defense. Granted, he is practicing against SC's defense, but 3 picks is not good. The kid is going to be great, hopefully, but he needs a lot of work.

I know quite a few players on the team and they're definitely not jumping up & down with joy that Barkley might be the QB in CBus.

I've heard Corp's injury isn't too bad, so we may see a repeat of last year when Night Stalker got hurt.

I heard he looked shaky in morning practice today. Were you there? I always assume you are at every practice...ha! What is the word out of afternoon practice?

I am hesitant to go by anything Wolfie writes, as he is usually very negative, but common sense tells me that having a true freshman in the Shoe will be a disaster. Playing against Servite or Mission Viejo is one thing....walking into the Shoe and watching the I get dotted right in front of your bench will be a huge intimidating distraction.

Corp = bust. Barkley = real deal.

Keep in mind, I'm the same guy who said Sanchez would underwhelm last year. But this time I'm right, dammit!

This is making Mitch Mustains decision to transfer to USC look pretty poor right now.

I should have been more clear. Mine was a prediction for the upcoming season.

Poor Mitch Mustain, should have stayed at Arkansas.
