Official Westlake 12 year old B team camp thread.

Today Coach Shaka started installing the offensive scheme which is very simple since only one kid has played tackle football prior to this season. After a three way battle at QB we have settled on two kids (One of which is Shaka's Nephew) to continue the fight for the starting job. I also found out we have a Chad Lewis in embryo on our hands which will open up our aerial attack.

Yesterday Coach Shaka'syoungerbrother started getting the defense figured out. We got rid of the strong safety and placed two of our smaller guys at noseguard to clog the middle. We will find out if this strategy works at scrimmage tomorrow.

As always we could use help. What do you think? Hot Lunch working with the receivers and CougJunkie working with the line?

I have been reading a lot about Coach Shaka being on the hot seat. He better win soon or he will be coaching 1st grade soccer next season.

I know you played line. While I'm fat enough these days to play line I was a skill position guy and really don't know the techniques for linemen. I'll have to ask our head coach but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we bring in a ringer to give some tips for a few practices.

Hey at least give me the opportunity to bring in my own recruits. I have to work with the remnants of last years flag football team.

Shaka, sorry but it sounds like you are pushing these kids too hard. Practices? coaching? offense and defense?

This is just a game, for pete's sake.

            wait a minute...

Not to worry, we will have orange slices and half-strength Gatorade (G2 for the fatties on the line) at halftime and pudding pops for the end of the game.

are you allowed to give recruits any of these treats or are they prohibited from accepting anything of greater value than .01 orange slices?

I should actually read up on this. Yesterday I bought a potential recruit (shaka's other nephew) an ice cream cone. This could constitute a violation. I of course will really on the USC legal defense to sidestep any ramifications.

Check out the Gap 8 defense. Works very well at that age. We modified it and it was basically a 6-2 with two corners and a safety. Everyone has a man, and you always plan man never zone. The two outside guys on the line play contain. The sweep's the most dangerous play. The two MLB's are the two studs of your team. Put your worst players at corner. If you can give good pressure it's rare for a 12 yo to hit a wideout and even more rare for a 12 yo WR to catch the ball.

That's very similar to what we're doing.

Believe it or not the nephew can throw for distance (30-40) which is great for a 12 year old) and rolling out both ways. If we can find someone who can catch (which I think we have) we may have a passing game. The only flaw with the nephew is he's a little slow on his first step.

Yesterday the thunder and lightning decided to descend close to Saratoga Springs right in time for practice. The head coach was accosted by a players mother prior to practice and had to promise that if thunder was heard the team would be taken off the field and into a picnic pavilion. So while the other Westlake teams continued practice in the rain while the thunder roared twenty miles away the Westlake 12B2 squad was out of the rain in a pavilion.

On hour of practice lost because of a promise to an overprotective mom.

In other news our defense scrimmaged the offense of the 12B1 team and stopped them cold. The B1 quarterback did have a 50% completion percentage completing one pass and having the other picked by one of our inside backers. While happy with the completion percentage the 12B1 coach was rumoured to be complaining about his quarterback's completion to interception ratio.

Next Tuesday Coach Shaka installs the rest of the offense as we prepare for our first game the following Saturday.

Well this has changed to an 8th grade team that actually wins once in a while. Just for fun I will upload a highlight every so often. This is from last weeks game. That's Coach Shaka's nephew running the bootleg, throwing the bomb, and getting destroyed at the end.
