I think that by the end of 2009, we'll see that Max Hall will have had a much better year than Andy Dalton statistically. I also think that in their respective big games, Max Hall will come out the winner there also. Andy Dalton has spent much of his career throwing the ball out of bounds if a play was broken. It was how he was trained to run the offense.

I think you underestimate Max Hall. A QB grows a lot between his junior and senior years. Just look at BJ.

Utah could be very good if we get decent quarterback play, but that is about as big an "if" as you can possibly have. If we don't we could lose 4-5 games. The latter is more likely than the former in my opinion.
Glad you're realistic. You also should be concerned about a new OC, and a new DC. Luckily, Utah has a schedule that should ease them into their jobs.

I may be in the minority, but I'm also not sold on Max.

Which I think is a little odd, considering I believed in Beck long before he showed that he was the real deal.

BJ had a bad shoulder throughout his junior season, what was Hall's excuse?

Hall doesn't need one. He played badly against TCU and UofU, that's a fact. Why did BJ need an excuse for his bad play his Junior year? Football players either execute or they don't execute.

Agreed. He will either learn from his mistakes and become better or he will not, and he will leave BYU as a good quarterback who led his team to a conference championship and a bowl victory during his first year.

John Beck had no excuse for his shortcomings during his junior year, either, but he learned. He studied film like crazy, especially the last play of the Utah game. He came up with something in the neighborhood of 26 things he could have done differently on that play alone. When the last play of the 2006 game came around and Utah threw the EXACT same defense at him as they did in 2005, he was ready for it.

Hall's legacy will depend now upon whether or not he will have done the same.

After TCU handed Max his ass on a platter you'd think he would have learned and studied more tape, but on the day before the Utah game when asked if he was worried about the defense, he said that the he and his buddies watched The Office the night before. Too cool to care, I guess. That's what happens when football is only the fifth priority.

I thought he said he watched the office instead of the Utah/TCU game.

Nor did he get a few teamates together, storm Bronco's office and say:
"Look dickweed, we don't want to get embarrased again. Maximum practices for a bowl game or else."

As much as people bag on John Beck for crying after the Utah game, I'd much rather see somebody so devoted to succeeding than shrugging off an embarrassing loss. In the words of one more eloquent than I, I wouldn't give a hoot and hell for a man who lost and laughed.

Yes, and healthy players obviously have an easier time executing than injured players do.

BJ didn't need an excuse, but it can hardly be a surprise that he played better healthy than injured.
