I will tell you that I can confirm something has changed, but A-Rod is being coy and is not talking to people about it out of respect to the team.

      • I'm pretty impressed with A-Rod. He's got three distinctly unique QB's who have a strong case for being starter.

We also win every time he is secretly calling the offensive plays. Dude is awesome!

          • Extended through 2023. This will help with recruiting. I think we will end up seeing some coordinator changes in the off-season, but overall I think that this is a net positive.

Reno Mahe and another player were talking on Twitter after the game that the lack of a contract extension was being used against Kalani at the Polynesian Bowl...and it cost BYU players.

I doubt he will help a great deal. The kids BYU is recruiting who end up at BYU would likely come to BYU no matter who is coaching. It seems to me that Kalani's posse has an endless supply of reasons why Kalani/BYU are being limited. I think they are right a great deal of the time I just don't like hearing from them because they seem selective to me as to when these limiting factors should be taken into consideration.

Saying that I am in the camp that thinks BYU should extend him. I think he has shown well enough to be extended. He is our own lovable MAC!

              • This is the right move. Frustrating that it took so long.

Kalani has a lot of great qualities. Hopefully his judgement will improve with experience.

When did you think the time was right to extend? If he would have finished with a losing record I thought BYU was justified to send him along.

If BYU can win two of the next 3 games, I think it'd be difficult to not view this season as a success. If someone told me Kalani would have 8 wins from this schedule, including 2 of the first 4, I would've been happy.
He needs to improve, but it would be nice if he had a true advocate among BYU's bureaucracy who could help secure more funding for recruiting operations. BYU is being outgunning by schools like Utah State on that front. The relevant people and departments have also made Kalani's job more challenging than his predecessors in terms of restricting admissions. It's cost BYU good players, when it shouldn't have.

BYU football coach is not an easy job.

A coach not having a contract extension in place is exactly the kind of material an opposing coach uses to negatively recruit. It helps. We shall see at early signing day. Some of BYU's commitments are experiencing P5 recruiting rushes, so I view this as a recruiting positive.

                      • This is just going to cost BYU when they have to fire him at the end of next year.

                        • I like the extension, mainly for two reasons.

                          1) Kalani can get big wins. With independent schedules, this is critical. I don't think anyone would trade two of the Tenn, USC, or BSU wins for wins over USF and Toledo. Seems a lot easier to fix whatever went wrong in the two flops. We must continue to get our share of P5 wins as long as we are an independent.

                          2) High Character. BYU won't find a better representative of the University. It is important that he wins too but if he were a jerk, I don't think he would get an extension with his record. Everyone wants Kalani to succeed and thus far he has done just enough.
