  • The PAC 11 Expansion Groundswell

Let's get this baby going. Those dumb hippies at Cal are so hopelessly in debt that they might have to drop athletics.

    http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/01/2...tounding-rate/

Cal chancellor Nicholas Dirks has formed a task force to recommend a sustainable athletic model. The group is likely months away from issuing its conclusions, but the elimination of sports teams is a potential, if not likely, outcome.

That's incredible. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this over the next few years, particularly in the lower divisions. Just too much of a resource requirement during a time of disruption.

I agree. The first domino is tilting.

Agreed. Fun to laugh, but this is kind of scary.

So servicing the debt is killing them. Doesn't Cal have some big donors that can bring that principal down. In the end they just eliminate some sports, but football and basketball don't go away. What are the minimal sports requirements for the PAC?
          Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

            FIFY.

The $4+ million dollar Larry Scott man screwed the PAC-12 with their network:

Long story short, the Pac-12 may have made one inadvertent and one deliberate mistake: they may have negotiated their rights deal too early and their insistence on being the sole owner of the Pac-12 Network is killing them on revenue. The conference agreed to a deal with Fox and ESPN back in 2011 but it's not up for another seven years. Unless the league can renegotiate parts of the deal, we're still years away from the schools in this conference raking in even close to what their counterparts in the Big Ten and SEC will.

How much more will each team in those conferences make? $10 million.

And lets not pretend like that short fall will only effect schools like your WSUs, your Oregon States, your Utahs. Nuh-uh. Over the remaining life of the deal, Michigan is set to rake in $80 million more than USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Stanford, all schools that consider themselves the class of the Pac-12; all schools that are now in an all out fight of keeping up with the Harbaughs they surely won't win.

Want me to make it worse? Here's Wilner:

$10 million gap per school X 12 schools X eight years = $960 million shortfall in total conference revenue.

            Basically: One billion.

Remember when we all thought this deal was so fantastic? Wasn't it great?

The PAC-12 will be leaving a billion dollars on the table! Why hasn't Larry been fired?

There were rumors that the new football stadium came in $100 million OVER bid. That's a large chunk of change.

Sounds more like Cal just isn't fiscally responsible. It's no secret that the SEC and B1G are the top two conferences in money. Football isn't going away because of money, but it'll continue to be more and more lopsided as the years go by and those teams collect tons more cash.

I would like to see the"hippies" start protesting the amount of money spent at great Academic institutions like Cal and Stanford on athletics. Those institutions should take the examples of Harvard and Yale when it comes to athletics.

Probably a wise move to fire and pay Dykes and his staff as well as Wilcox and his staff.

I read an article at the start of Scott's tenure that he thought he could tap into the Asian market because of the PAC-12 geographic footprint. He might want to try getting that going sooner then later.

It has started, but its effectiveness is still in question.

Good grief, don't UCLA and Cal already have enough Asian premed majors?
