"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

For every Cougar fan playing ball in the yard, he's The Coach.

And the score is always 46-45.

Some great stuff on twitter today. Nice to see him recognized like this.

Posted this to CB but I'll add it here.

One of my fond memories of Lavell was at a CB golf event honoring the 1984 (if I remember correctly) at Thanksgiving Point. If I remember correctly, PAC had just shattered his elbow and had to pull out. Jefe asked me to help with some of the admin of the tourney. I enthusiastically agreed.

Lavell had just returned from his mission. Three things Lavell loved was golf, food and his players. This event was perfect for him. I had a few minutes to speak with him and the entire conversation, Lavell never stopped eating. Half of the conversation, Lavell had food on his chin. I said something discretely and he said he'd get it when he was done, that more would probably get there before he finished. He just chuckled and kept eating. He cracked me up. Just zero ego, great sense of humor and yet he carried himself with class and dignity. Even with coleslaw on his chin. I'm shocked how emotional I've felt today. I will greatly miss him.

Mine's a dumb little story, but it fits. My family visited New York in the summer of 2002, just after my senior year of high school, and we went to church on Sunday in the building that is now the temple. My recollection is that they had either just announced that the building would become a temple or the local members were aware of significant renovations and had a hush hush understanding of what was about to happen. Anyway, after sacrament meeting, we walked out the door and there was my mom, gabbing in the hallway with LaVell himself. She had done some namedropping to strike up a conversation, she being related to someone he'd know. It was a short conversation, and I don't remember doing anything more than gawk, but he was kind enough to suggest that I looked like I'd be a good tight end.

Such a sad day. My wife was very nice not to say what she must have been thinking when I came home and sobbed.

I was kidding. Drage is cool. I knew him a bit before.

I never met him but I, too, feel a personal loss. He was BYU football. He was a great example of a good man. I will miss him.
                            PLesa excuse the tpyos.

Growing up my father worked as a mid level administrator at BYU. I was often on campus with him and when I was we saw Lavell several times. I know he barely knew my dad, but he would always say "How are you doing, Tom?" and they would exchange pleasantries and he would talk to me. We were absolute nobodies to him and yet he would always make a minute to talk to us. He was just a quality person and as humble as could be.

How fortunate we were to have him as our coach. When you look at the disaster around someone like Paterno and how hard it is to like some of the greatest coaches as human beings it is amazing he is not more lionized. I still cannot believe anyone ever wanted to move on from the Lavell era.

They should leave them on for at least a week.
