Tough to see him leave the Utes...it'll be interesting to see who goes with him and if Kyle has the sand to name Sitake as the DC.
When I read the title of this thread, I immediately wondered as well if Sitake would be promoted.

Gary Anderson is a great coach, and I hope he does well at Utah State.

Kevin Graham on 1280 reported about 5 minutes ago that Anderson is on his way up to Logan for a 3rd time, this time with his wife. The offer is close to 1 million per. Also he does not want to uproot his family so in fact for the first year (until his oldest graduates from Juan Diego) he plans on commuting.

That seems really high for USU. Does either Bronco or Whittingham make that much?

I guess USU had some donors pony up some serious cash for either the return of John L. Smith or Gary Anderson.

Didn't Anderson already have a head job stint at SUU for a year? How did that go?

Makes sense. I just checked Smith's coaching record - I didn't realize he wasn't even that good at USU. He was good at Idaho and good at Louisville, but at MSU and USU, he was pretty mediocre.

Good for Anderson if it works out for him. I actually think that USU could be decent...there really is no reason why they can't be in that 2nd tier of teams in the WAC. If he gets Utah State to be 7-5 or 6-6 year after year, they will build him a statue.

This year at USU, they should have had 2 more wins if not for some real bad breaks.

About as well as I expect his Utah State tenure to go.

He went 4-7. The 4 wins that year equaled the previous 3 year win total.

He then resigned and came back to the Utes after Meyer took most every assistant with him and Sanford went to UNLV.

USU is better than their record indicates. The cupboard is not completely bare for Anderson. If Boise State ( a former JC) can build a program Utah state can as well.

Utah St will not be successful even if Anderson is a great head coach. Name a state the size of Utah that supports 3 DIA football programs? Utah St football died when Utah and BYU kept them out of the WAC.

No offense Funk, but that is silly. A program can get up on its feet with the right coach and the right recruiting.

The past 10 years have been brutal, but Utah State won 5-7 games seven times in the past 16 years. Not great obviously, but it can be done. If the Utah State athletic department is willing to drop some money in to the program, they can be a solid team. Will they win 10 games in a season, most likely not...can they be a 'successful' team of winning 6 or 7 games, yes, I don't see why they cant do that in the WAC.

Boise State has not built their program with Idaho players. There is no doubt that he will have to recruit out of state.

He actually coached under Meyer the year they went to the Fiesta Bowl. He returned when Tuiasasopo went to coach the D line at Arizona.

Anderson is a great hire for Utah St. Unfortunately and I hope I am wrong for Coach Anderson's sake because I have a ton of respect for him I don't think anyone can really win at Utah St. anymore.

Oklahoma comes to mind...I would think that it is similar in size and scope with Utah.
