Having just attended the Nebraska-Purdue game, you just perfectly described Nebraska: "They shovel out ungodly amounts of money to win...Football is more important than church to these people. The Oklahoma's and Ohio States (and Nebraska) have the history and fan base (as well as recruiting when the program has been successful)..." Nebraska will always be an outlier and they will always have to recruit nationally to be successful. You are correct that they don't have it now or no longer have it but this is not a permanent situation. College football is cyclical and will always be that way. Oklahoma, Ohio St. and even Alabama have had down periods. Just not as long as the one Nebraska is experiencing. I find it somewhat amusing that an Austin paper published that "Nebraska will never be Nebraska again". The same could have been said about Texas not so very long ago. Being in the Big Ten doesn't hurt Nebraska at all. Nebraska won four National Championships when they were part of the Big 8 - which (shocker) did not include Texas. Competing in the B1G West is actually an advantage - it is similar to or perhaps easier than than competing in the Big 12 North. I do think Nebraska will be Nebraska again under Scott Frost although admittedly the program is at a low point at present.Originally posted by Moliere View PostOklahoma is an outlier, but I’d argue they are still relevant due to their ties to Texas (mainly Dallas). But a 1 in 18 anomaly doesn’t invalidate the premise. And don’t blame it on ESPN. The southern schools and their fans love football. They shovel out ungodly amounts of money to win. Look at aTm and Jimbo. FSU might just fire their coach and eat $20+ million just so they can win now instead of waiting five years.
Football is more important than church to these people. The Oklahoma’s and Ohio States have the history and fan base and Oklahoma has the recruiting. Nebraska had it but it’s gone and moving to the Big 10 didn’t help...it hurt.“Not the victory but the action. Not the goal but the game. In the deed the glory.”

Yes. I’m relieved someone finally got to the irony of the Statesman’s observation. It’s looking less and less likely that Texas will ever be Texas again.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostI find it somewhat amusing that an Austin paper published that "Nebraska will never be Nebraska again". After you have the resources and fan support (which Nebraska has), college football is 90% coaching (which obviously includes recruiting). Nebraksa hasn't had an elite coach since Osborne retired. If they can manage to hire one they will be back. I dont know if Frost is that guy but I obviously hope he is.
I don't buy the geography challenges argument. Yeah SEC schools and socal schools obviously have geography as a built in advantage but what determines which of those schools dominate? It's all coaching. For a decade in the SEC it was Florida. Now its Alabama. When Saban retires, they will drop off and it will be someone else. USC isnt always USC. When they have a Pete Carrol they are at the top, but they have gone significant periods with average coaching leading to average results. If geography mattered that much, UCLA could manage to do something (anything!) significant in the past 30 years. Yeah Lincoln isnt exciting but it's not like Norman and Columbus are South Beach.

Can the Nebraska program survive a prolonged down period? Time will tell. But if Nebraska and Texas were stocks, which one would you buy? Don't kid yourself."There is no creature more arrogant than a self-righteous libertarian on the web, am I right? Those folks are just intolerable."

Yes, and what is my level of investment? If it is the bulk of my retirement account then of course I buy Texas. If it is additional money with which I can be more aggressive then I buy Nebraska, given my screed above about coaching mattering most in CFB. In spite of his head-scratching start at Nebraska, I still buy Frost before I buy Herman.Originally posted by Pelado View PostWhat's the price of each stock today?

Yes. Nothing brings Sooner Nation more pride than defeating the Longhorns with UT's own rejected recruits each year.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYou two are hilarious. Since Nebraska has hit rock bottom, I'd buy it. One needs to widen their vision when it comes to Nebraska, they have survived prolonged down periods before. In the early days of college football they had their moments of glory. Post WWII, they were down until Bob Devaney. If one had bought Nebraska stock just prior to the 1962 season, he or she would have had 40 years of great returns. Nevertheless, I didn't expect the current recession to last 17 years. But as you stated, time will tell.Originally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostYou two are hilarious.
