Yes, and what is my level of investment? If it is the bulk of my retirement account then of course I buy Texas. If it is additional money with which I can be more aggressive then I buy Nebraska, given my screed above about coaching mattering most in CFB. In spite of his head-scratching start at Nebraska, I still buy Frost before I buy Herman.

Can the Nebraska program survive a prolonged down period? Time will tell. But if Nebraska and Texas were stocks, which one would you buy? Don't kid yourself.

Nebraska will always be an outlier and they will always have to recruit nationally to be successful. You are correct that they don't have it now or no longer have it but this is not a permanent situation. College football is cyclical and will always be that way. Oklahoma, Ohio St. and even Alabama have had down periods. Just not as long as the one Nebraska is experiencing. I find it somewhat amusing that an Austin paper published that "Nebraska will never be Nebraska again". The same could have been said about Texas not so very long ago. Being in the Big Ten doesn't hurt Nebraska at all. Nebraska won four National Championships when they were part of the Big 8 - which (shocker) did not include Texas. Competing in the B1G West is actually an advantage - it is similar to or perhaps easier than than competing in the Big 12 North. I do think Nebraska will be Nebraska again under Scott Frost although admittedly the program is at a low point at present.

I don't buy the geography challenges argument. Yeah SEC schools and socal schools obviously have geography as a built in advantage but what determines which of those schools dominate? It's all coaching. For a decade in the SEC it was Florida. Now its Alabama. When Saban retires, they will drop off and it will be someone else. USC isnt always USC. When they have a Pete Carrol they are at the top, but they have gone significant periods with average coaching leading to average results. If geography mattered that much, UCLA could manage to do something (anything!) significant in the past 30 years. Yeah Lincoln isnt exciting but it's not like Norman and Columbus are South Beach.

Your reference to Oklahoma’s title actually militates against the argument, though. It was 18 years ago and done with a team of almost entirely in-state recruits that had dreamed of playing for the Sooners and were willing to do so through a string of losing seasons. The running back was from a 3A school and ran a 5.0 40. Guys like that are now routinely passed over in favor of speedy prima donnas from Houston, DC, or Bishop Gorman. I’m not sure it’s a net gain when half of those 4 and 5 stars end up transferring out after they realize what it’s like to live in Oklahoma.

As far as the Dixieland South is concerned, ESPN has been wildly successful in promoting that part of the country, whether SEC or ACC, as the premiere place to play or watch college ball. It’s hard for kids from anywhere in the country to pass up that prestige.
