  • I'd be curious to see what BYU is doing to prevent similar protests. Hopefully president worthen has issued a statement to get ahead of any potential issues.
"Discipleship is not a spectator sport. We cannot expect to experience the blessing of faith by standing inactive on the sidelines any more than we can experience the benefits of health by sitting on a sofa watching sporting events on television and giving advice to the athletes. And yet for some, “spectator discipleship” is a preferred if not primary way of worshipping." -Pres. Uchtdorf

Don't worry, it's in the Handbook.
"Guitar groups are on their way out, Mr Epstein."

Upon rejecting the Beatles, Dick Rowe told Brian Epstein of the January 1, 1962 audition for Decca, which signed Brian Poole and the Tremeloes instead.

When I was a freshman taking American Heritage, there were some girls in the class who were distressed that the professor used clips from R-rated movies in a couple of his lectures. Then there was the guy walking around the library with a petition to give to President Bateman objecting to the girls on campus wearing shirts that would expose an inch of skin on their lower back if they bent over. As far as I can tell, BYU ignores these idiots.

It's the flip side to the same coin. Self-important, irrational people who are insulated from real world concerns because they're in college. You could swear those girls collapsing on the ground in the NY Times tweet had just escaped one of the ISIS Yazidi forced prostitution rings, found out a family member had died or found out they have terminal cancer. Instead, no one, including them, have any idea what they're writhing on the ground about.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

I think this phrase or sentiment is as big of joke as the new wave of racial hypersensitivity. It is something EPU or people on CB would say. This is not an issue of tolerance or intolerance.

These protests are taking place in our country's centers of higher learning. many of these students are at the graduate level. The shocking problem here that I see is that this new movement is an indictment on the quality of our education, in general, and of the ability of these kids to think critically and come up with pragmatic solutions to problems. I dont feel like I am exaggerating when I say that most of the self-appointed spokespeople at these colleges seem to lack even a basic understanding of the First Amendment and the rights given to people to say offensive or hurtful things--stuff that you would cover in a HS civics or maybe poly sci class. They also don't seem to understand that schools are not legal arbiters and are not empowered to enforce the US constitution nor police private citizens. In short, I look at these kids and am awestruck by how stupid they are. Not stupid in the sense that I disagree with them, stupid in the sense that they really seem like they are unintelligent. unfortunately, because of political pressure, people in the know can't really come out and explain to these kids that while their goals are admirable, they are too stupid to go about this in the right way.

The video from Yale was especially astounding. I assumed Yale represented the academic elite of our nation's youth. instead I see bonehead students saying that the First Amendment doesn't protect speech that someone personally finds offensive.

We have a much bigger problem on our hands than "tolerance."

He deliberately ran up to the bumper of the car as it was slowly moving forward. And this was one of the main factors to get Wolfe to resign.
Hopefully the hunger striker isn't a stress eater because his life is going to continue to be under a microscope for awhile.

                • The Missouri football team should be proud that they represent this kind of student. She doesn't believe that the 1st Amendment protects students on college campuses.

                  • What a dumbass. Yes- venues of higher education should be places of healing first and foremost.

I think university admissions are going to be working overtime to try to nip this type of shit in the bud.

"we as student journalists cannot approach (subjects) with anger and hostility b/c it only escalates the situation." Yeah that Asian kid was a real raging bull in there.

Absurd answer starts at about 3:45 mark.

Great to see elite level journalism students really grasping the meaning of the First Amendment.

I agree with much of what you say, but I believe that these are learned tactics that are proving to be effective in achieving short term goals. The "success" of these types of protests will clearly beget more protests and more behavior that is provocative. I think that these protesters are not stupid or ignorant but instead have moved to cynical and obfuscatory.

                            That's fair.

These tactics are clearly working in the short-term, but like many quick-fixes, will shortly reveal themselves as unsustainable. You can't have student bodies ousting university leadership on the basis of perceived inaction towards things that are not within the university's control in the first place. You can't have students firing teachers because teachers don't cancel tests fast enough. Most importantly, you can't ignore the First Amendment in an effort to appease overly-coddled or hyper-sensitive narcissists. Sooner rather than later, this will lead to a wrongful termination lawsuit and that will be the end of schools flippantly relieving professors and administrators from their duty.

I also find it interesting that while the media has covered these protests in earnest, you can already sense that public sentiment is shifting from "oh, the humanity!" to "these guys are clowns." More and more people are expressing exasperation and bewilderment as well as anger and frustration towards these sorts of displays. the tide will shift because eventually, logic and reason win out.
