Why wasn't a wildcat QB implemented in the second week?

Yeah, effort him. Unless of course he sees the light on his mission in which case we are nothing if not forgiving.

Not if he wanted to stay eligible.

The single wing offense AKA Wildcat was invented by a nobody named Pop Warner and was only the preeminent offense in pro/college football for 50 years. Sure wish someone was around to tell Warner about his gimmick and not waste his life on it.

          It's become a gimmick.

Only when a team runs one series a game out of it. Plenty of very successful high school programs run single wing exclusively. Let YouTube be your guide.

As for myself, I think BYU could run a Paul Johnson/Ken Nuimalotolo style flexbone very well. Would be fun to see Taysom at QB, JSwag and Squally Canada as the A backs, and Algie/Bernard as the B back.

It's also pretty fun seeing tanner at QB throwing for 300+ a game.

package does not equal offense. agreed that the wing is a viable offense but its uniqueness means it's not worth the practice time to install for a couple plays to give tanner a break.

We've been practicing the read option for multiple years - spring ball, preseason, and during the season when Taysom is in. I think we can all agree that we don't want Mangum risking life an limb running the read-option.

However, if you look at our short-yardage offense you will see the LB's cheating around the outside and making plays behind the O-line. Having a wildcat in there gives the runner a half-step if going up the middle, or keeps the LBs honest by being able to go around them if they cheat in.

If this was the 80s than the wildcat could be considered a gimmick. However, the read option has been part of our base offense for two years. There has to be someone around who can run it a few plays a game.

It's a gimmick in the sense that it's not a part of your regular offense even though there are similarities and requires a specialized person to man the QB slot. ( Taysom would make the ultimate wildcat QB.) The wildcat is limiting because you're throwing someone into the mix who usually lacks in the passing game or, if this person is a QB, lacks in game experience. Because of this it is a gimmick. I'm fine with the gimmick if you have the right person lined up behind center. I do not believe BYU currently has a guy like that. Like I stated before Covey is that type of guy because he's athletic enough to run but because he's a former QB is a threat to throw the ball. Defenses have to play someone like Covey straight up lest they get burned with the pass.

I'm the same HawkeyeCoug dating back to the WAC-16 board. Looks like my bad reputation has preceded me.

Good point on available talent. Nacua may be the best person to run it right now, but heaven help the secondary if that were to happen.

Perhaps the solution to cheating LB's is to actually throw a pass to a TE. The way the backers are moving up so fast the TE wouldn't even have to do a bump - just run a two yard out and enjoy all the green field off a play-action.

However, that brings up another question - do we have a TE who can catch anymore? It's been far too long. Maybe Langi can play TE as well when he comes back.

Houk seems to be that kind of receiver this year. It puzzles me why we haven't had a tight end option for so many years. Does Bronco take the best athletes that could fill this role and plug them into the defense?

I just think our TEs haven't worked out for various reasons. After pitta we had Jake Murphy lined up but that didn't work out.. then we had Mahina, who was just quiet at BYU but good enough to at least make a practice squad in the NFL... I have no idea why we haven't seen a TE dominate since Max Hall's regime.
