I've been tangentially paying attention to the Big 12 media days. Utah is still coasting on their past rep with the national media. Doesn't seem to matter what happened last year. Apparently their QB is the preseason newcomer of the year. And JR was apparently the best player on BYU's roster so the Cougs are done!Comment

So I went and looked up the drama. really not that big of a deal. I do think it is interesting that BYU chose Tanuvasa for media days. I think it might be to pull attention away from the Jake Retzlaff stuff and back onto "hey, we are big brother, now" sort of stuff. and indeed it did generate some distracting tweets and clips to that end. One question i saw Tanuvasa asked was "how do the programs differ?" he went on to say well, Utah is all about "grit and toughness" where BYU is all about "love", LOL!Originally posted by falafel View Post
It got me thinking about how the programs are actually really, really similar at this point in terms of identity and that of course BYU really wants to differentiate itself. Having Tanuvasa front and center for media to ask "what is the difference?" is probably a branding strategy, but I am admittedly woefully incompetent in identifying such, so just a guess.
Sitake, Hill, Roderick, Pouha, are all Wittingham coaching products(influenced of course, by others way like Gary Anderson, etc.) but the common football-culture denominator between them all is "Utah under Whittingham." BYU's best season in recent years looks very similar to how Utah has had success in the past 2 decades: Tough and gritty defensive play with a serviceable offense that minimizes mistakes. Makes sense that there is a full-court effort to create distinction.Comment
