First, an overview of last year.
Record: 3-9
Big wins: Well, none. But beating Rutgers was probably the biggest and they did finish with three straight wins after opening 0-9.
Almost: Only lost to Michigan by 3 pts at home - led 21-14 going into the fourth quarter, 21-7 before that, lost 24-21 [edit correction].
Looked bad when: They lost to Buffalo by 29 points and 62-17 to UCF.
They were good at: Freshman Casey Cochran showed some chops, starting the last four games - and going 3-1 as a starter. Completed 63.4% of his passes with 11 TDs against 4 INTs. And while SMU, Rutgers, Memphis and Temple aren't exactly a killers row, they also aren't Stony Brook and Buffalo. Based on his season long rush of five yards and his net negative rushing total, it seems safe to predict that we won't have to worry too much about chasing him in the open field.
They were bad at: Running the football. Ranked 119th in the country and averaged a pitiful 2.6 YPC. New scatback recruit Arkeel Newsome is meant to help address this, but given that his only other offer was from U Mass and he's a true frosh, seems unlikely that he'll have much immediate impact on August 29th.
Of note: Freaky-deaky new wolfskie helmets which you can see in the picture in this article on the apparently "changing" football culture.
U Conn football fan forum: http://the-boneyard.com/forums/uconn-football.2/ - has a hilarious thread going right now about how U Conn is "academically superior" to most of the B1G. Also, doesn't like Chrome's ad blocker so I opened it in Firefox.
Informative thread here on what U Conn fans see as success in 2014 (one says basically - five hard fought losses and a bowl): http://the-boneyard.com/threads/defi...onnblog.58969/ - blog post at the head includes a ref to BYU as a "brand name" program (pays the same compliment to Boise) and says selling out the opener against BYU will be a key.
MG, feel free to stop your kvetching now about me posting in other forums.
