    Interesting CougarStats Factoids Thread

In the thread that may only interest IndyCoug, here are some interesting stats I found checking out CougarStats:

There have only been 14 instances where BYU has had a 1,000 yard rusher. Two of them coming this year, with Taysom and Jamaal Williams both eclipsing the 1,000 yard mark. On top of that, they have had only 6 instances with a 1,200 yard rusher. Both Taysom and Jamaal have topped that mark this year. Assuming even a below-average bowl performance (Taysom needs 16 yards, Jamaal needs 25), they'll end up with the 4th and 5th best rushing performances in BYU history, in the same year.

Also of note, were it not for sacks counting against Taysom's totals, he would likely be in place to have the second most prolific rushing season in terms of yardage in Cougar history. Pretty impressive.

Similarly, for all of BYU's prolific passers, there have been surprisingly only 16 instances of 1,000 yard receivers in a season. Chris Smith and Eric Drage are the only two Cougars to record that feat more than once. For as much as we've thrown the ball, and for some of the records our QBs had set, this was very surprising to me.

There are also only 15 instances where a receiver had double digit touchdown receptions. Hoffman and Drage are the only repeaters on that list.

Both of those stats surprise me. Given the history of success in the passing game, I wonder if frequently having 1000 yard receivers may be a sign they are not spreading the ball around enough.

Read that this is the only season ever with two 1,000 yard rushers.

Didn't Collie have multiple 1000 yard seasons?
EDIT: I guess he missed it by 50 yards his Sophomore season.

Yes, two of the top 6 all-time rushing seasons have happened this year, with a sub-par offensive line.

Assuming that a QB throws for 3,500 yards (something that surprisingly has only happened 19 times in BYU history) would account for roughly 29% of the total passing yards. Assuming that an average passing play has 4 eligible receivers (some 3, most 4, some 5) I would expect your top WR to account for around 30% of production, your second WR in the 22% to 25% range, number three in the 15% to 20% range, number four in the 10% to 15% range. That leaves between 10% and 23% of the remaining production to be split among "other" depending on depth.

So I guess the surprising thing to me is the relatively low number of 3,500 yard passers in BYU history.

3500 sounds good to me. The team has 2649 recieving yards this year. As Hill and the Oline continue to progress, i would hope Hills rushing numbers drop and the passing numbers improve.

I agree that complaining about Anae is lame. This team has been a nice improvement. With a sophmore QB and a limited line that was more than I hoped for.

When thinking about historical stats we need to remember that bowl games didn't count for stats and the regular season was only 11 games until about 7 or 8 years ago. For many years BYU played in Hawaii every year and got a 12th game that way. But still, the additional games in the last several years is one reason we see bigger numbers from today's athletes.

I picked 1990 to see those totals. For some reason all the RB, HB, FB, TE and WR receiving stats don't add up to Ty's passing totals (plus it looked like another QB got some mop up time passing).

Adding up all the receiving stats (which again didn't add up to Ty's stats) looks like the most productive receiver (Chris Smith) had 24% of the yards and 20% of the receptions. The highest TD reception receiver (Micah Matsuzaki) had 20% of the TD. 15 different players recorded receiving stats.

I vote for recruiting more Taysoms and JWills.

Furthermore, it's not just the pace of the offense and getting a lot more plays that's producing those yards -- the yards per rushing attempt is very good for both guys.

Hill is averaging 5.6 yards per attempt and Williams 5.9 yards per attempt. Unga and Curtis Brown (for example) never averaged that much per carry in any season.

Luke Staley averaged over 8 yards per rushing attempt in 2001 -- crazy.
