  • The "Guess Who I Am" Recruiting Revisited thread

I always think it's fascinating looking up prospects a few years after their recruitment to see where the big hits or misses were at. Let's see how many of these hits or misses we're able to identify:

    From ESPN:

Two-Star QB prospect, Overall scout grade of 71. School interest list (besides where he signed): Hawaii, Memphis, Utah, Washington

XXXXX is a tall and lanky quarterback prospect that is part pocket passer and part runner as he is really athletic. He is very slender and lacks bulk and strength, but shows good arm strength and playmaking ability when the original play breaks down and he can utilized on designed runs where he is very effective. Has the look of a wide receiver and moves like one too. Shows the ability to make most necessary throws and has a high, over-the-top release. Has natural velocity on his passes and the height to survey the entire field. Shows sound footwork dropping back and getting set quickly. Shows adequate touch and flashes the ability to lead receivers when throwing underneath, but also shows the arm to push the ball downfield and shows very good velocity throwing outside of the numbers. At times shows very good plant and deliver on timing routes and has shown the ability to fit the ball into tight spots when his feet are set and he gets some power behind him. Shows adequate pocket presence, does a nice job of stepping up when feels pressure coming off the edge and keeping his eyes downfield. He appears to be at his best when the launch point is moved and he can make plays on the run or when improvising. While XXXXX does show some redeeming physical traits, he is raw and inconsistent. Does not always show the ability to hang in the pocket and stay with his reads. Accuracy can waver and he lacks a great overall arm in terms of power and ball speed. Has a high release, but really "cups" the ball with his wrist in his delivery. XXXXX could be a guy that develops later down the road and needs to be in the spread offense where he can use his athleticism. Could possibly be a guy that moves to wide receiver at the next level.

Yep that is my guess as well. Mariota was not highly recruited.

Two stars? He must not be that good.

Yup, it was Mariotta. Probably too easy. Junkie should be automatically disqualified from this game, being the stalker that he is.

                How about this one:

XXXX is a hard-hitting safety prospect who plays with great instincts, quickness and tenacity. Possesses a thick, athletic frame that he utilizes as an intimidating presence over the middle. Shows the ability to cover ground quickly and is best breaking on underneath routes. Flashes great read-and-recognition skills. This kid can quickly anticipate where the ball is going acceleration to full speed within steps. The result is usually separation between the ball and the receiver. When he can't get in between, he possesses near perfect timing on his break, punishing wide receivers. Plays the run hard as well. Flashes the speed and plant and drive skill to close quickly on his front-side run alley. However, he plays very deep at times at his safety position, often at more than 12 yards. This slows up his lateral pursuit and the ability to support in the box. We question whether this cushion is to mask his lack of elite range in the deep zone. There is no argument about his short-area speed, but his ability to get off the hash and break over the top of speedy wide outs has not been showcased. We also have concerns about his ability to turn and run with inside slots in one-on-one coverage. The shoulder hits won't necessarily supplant players at the next level either. He must keep the same aggressiveness but remain reliable as the last defender. Needs to consistently bring his arms and shoulders through the tackle. Bottom line, if used right, Sorenson will make a good college safety. Has the frame to potentially play at 215 pounds. Might be best suited as a permanent fixture in the box at strong safety.

                      1) I was about to post the same thing.
                      2) He forgot to remove a Sorenson.

Well with that being said that is a pretty good evaluation and clearly he has worked on a few things.

                            Here is one:

77 Overall scout grade. Other schools include: Fresno, Hawaii, SDSU, Utah and Washington

XXXXX is not an overly flashy runner, but this guy is really the complete package at the high school level. He has a lot of physical tools that project well as a future college load back. Is thick, built low to the ground and has good body composition. He can run, block and catch the ball out of the backfield; overall a very productive runner and also a talented safety on defense. Offensively, he is a blue-collar, downhill back who is strong and sturdy between the tackles. Attacks the hole and gets north quickly. Shows better-than-adequate burst out of his downhill cuts and flashes adequate lateral agility/shiftiness through the hole -- making the first defender miss. Most production stems off his yards after contact. He displays good in-line strength, balance and lean breaking through arm-tackles. Has a strong, powerful lower base and center of gravity that is difficult to knock off-balance. Never stops his feet or body from moving and is a determined back. Our main concern on offense is he does not always look very fluid and natural as a runner. Can miss the cutback creases and does not project high as a pick and slide zone runner at the next level. Top-end speed is solid when he breaks free into the second level but elusiveness appears marginal; not very fluid through his hips. More of a subtle, one-cut-and-go, north-south runner. Potentially a tough and consistent every-down back who could carry the load and wear down a defense as the game goes. Defensively, he is a ball-hawking safety who excels at playing the ball in front of him. Closes strong, fast and with direct angles. Good plant and drive skill. Runs the alley well getting over trash and is a collision type of tackler who can set the tempo of the difference with his fast and physical style of play. May be limited to down in the box schemes at the major college level due to his lack of great hip-fluidity and change-of-direction skill. Overall, XXXXX is a tough and durable skill prospect who plays the game fast, physical and appears to be a fierce competitor. Maybe a better total football player at this point than a college positional prospect.
