    Tailgating Question

I'm helping to plan the tailgating party for BYU's game against Houston in October.

Guy from Provo is pushing indoor tailgating party, and I'm curious if that would make it more/less likely for you to participate. Party is in a building adjacent to the stadium. I'm worried we'll lose foot traffic and participation if we take it indoors. Thoughts?

What's his reasoning? What do you expect the weather to be like?

Isn't October essentially the best month of the year in Houston? Why would I want to be indoors when the weather is awesome outside? And nothing about being inside feels anything like tailgating to me. It sounds a lot like potlucking, though.

Price is a biggie. It's not cheap, but we can expand the amount of space we rent based on ticket sales (they have retractable walls and its a set price per "room" purchased). Also, we won't have to purchase portapotties, electricity, etc.

The downside is that we have to use the stadium's food vendors. A box lunch (hot dog, potato salad, chips and cookie is $17 per person).

We're going to look at options off site.

I won't be attending the tailgate if they are offering a $17 box lunch. That sounds like a horrible idea. People that are coming to Houston aren't going to want to eat a hotdog at a tailgate. This isn't Utah or Idaho. It would also seem weird to tailgate inside a building. It's too much like a ward activity. Keep it outside and offer BBQ or something Cajun or both.

We run into the same issue with food if we stay on Reliant's property outdoors. We're looking at places adjacent to the Stadium and we'll hire someone to make BBQ for us (The Tick and Drunk Tank---you guys interested in opening Fat Daddy's-Houston yet?) and make it as Texan as possible.

It sounds like you are well on your way to the normal official BYU tailgate lameness. I have not been to a single official BYU tailgate at any game that was not like a ward activity you have to pay for.

Which reminds me, we need to have a CUF tailgate at this game. I'll smoke the butt/brisket. Anyone else coming to town to see some Cougar on Cougar action?

$17 for a box lunch?!? I'm heading to Moliere's for some real BBQ and to play with his dog.

The official BYU tailgate is the stupidest thing in history. A bunch of vendors offering crappy giveaways, if anything, when you sign up for their spam list. And a crappy band. That's it.

I've got to assume it makes the university money because I can't believe even the deluded morons who dream this crap up really think it's a good tailgate party.

And yet the cougar club ones at away games are infinitely worse.

Can you get Ty Detmer and/or Julianne Hough to come to your tailgate party? I might come then even though Moliere's dog is pretty dang cute.

For anyone crashing at my house, I'll have pulled pork the night before and crepes the next morning! Hopefully it's an afternoon game.
