  • 2013 Spring Camp

I really, really hope that Tom Holmoe puts his foot down this year and forces Bronco to hold a spring game. And BYUtv should televise it. There really isn't any reason not to, and I think fan interest in the team and preparations for the 2013 season are going to be high. Fans want to see what Anae is going to do with the offense and what players are going to work in his system.

For BYU71 and others keeping track, this is a beef I have with Bronco's program - that he ignores the fan sentiment when it comes to the spring scrimmage. I understand the reasons he doesn't like to do it, but I think this is something he needs to bend on in deference to the fans.

Maybe they can bus in some OL from SUU to help them have enough warm bodies to have a scrimmage.

I agree. Both on the idea of holding an actual spring game, and televising it on BYUtv.

I like that they've done drills with kids - and would love to have them continue that as well.

I understand that Bronco seems to have a love/hate relationship with many fans. But I don't think he understands that this is one thing he could do - that would still benefit his team - that requires very little personal interaction with fans, doesn't have him speaking with them or responding to them, and that which builds all kinds of favor.

Losing Pritchard two years ago probably didn't help.

          No, I'm sure it didn't.

But something like that could happen at any practice. And the reality is that they hold multiple scrimmages during spring and fall camp anyway. So why do that if there is such a concern for injury?

I guess I'm just saying that you do what you can to be careful, but you can't just shut it down completely.

Jason Beck on True Blue on the QB situation. "We'll go with seniority to start, so senior Munns will step in day 1 getting the snaps, and then junior Ammon Olsen after that, and go from there." Interesting. Jason Beck's a well spoken guy with experience in a few systems. I don't know if he'll be an upgrade in that area, but it seems like we can't get worse.

Interesting. I'm sure the OC has a different idea in mind, but we'll see how it plays out. What's the status on Taysom? Did he mention how active can participate in Spring practice?

Last night while channel surfing I happened onto True Blue. They said no 11 on 11's for him, but he will participate in 7 on 7's.

Pretty sure Ammon Olsen will be a RS soph.

I'd be stoked if he can do 7 on 7. It's where he needs the most work.

For the record I have absolutely no problem with your generally positive attitude about Bronco, the FB program and BYU.

I may disagree from time to time, but at least your positive attitude is not accompanied with an arrogant attitude toward someone who does disagree with you. In our disagreements you have never, as I remember, challenged my manhood, senility or concluded I am not worthy of anything but the telestial kingdom.

A few years ago somebody, I think it was Santos, mentioned how impressive a figure Munns physically casts. He's a big guy and seems to have a cannon arm when you watch him in warmups. I wonder why he's never been given a sniff. I don't know much at all about Ammon Olsen. Is Mangum going to participate? I read somewhere that he's not going on a mission, but I'm not sure if that's for real or not.

I kind of like the idea of the new staff coming in without per-conceived ideas as to who should be starting and who is the best player. I kind of hope that they do that with all positions. Sure - there might be some guys who are pretty obvious, but I like the idea that theoretically if a coach has a personality issue with a kid that kept him from being objective as to the kids abilities, then they get to start from square one. And you won't have a good player sitting.

Anyway - I like the idea of starting over, to a degree. And assuming that the guy with the most seniority is the #1 guy until he is unseated, is OK by me.

Don't expect a spring game this year. The O-line still lacks depth as many of the new comers will not be here for Spring ball.

Ryker Mathews, Maanaki Vaitai, Solomone Kafu, Blair Tushaus are all available. After that you have Brock Stringham and Michael Yeck to man the right tackle spot. Then things get really thin as you go deep down the depth chart with Quinn Lawlor, Terrence Alleto, Kyle Johnson, Andrew Crawford and recently returned missionary Jordan Black.

I am not seeing a spring game. Maybe in 2014 when all of the new signed lineman are in spring camp.
