We won 34-31 in overtime. It was awesome.

11/21/81 - Utah at BYU.

I believe this was the last game at the old Cougar Stadium. I remember the groundbreaking ceremony after the game for LES.

Del "Popcorn" Rodgers broke a long TD run early in the game but my hopes for a victory were quickly squashed with BYU winning 56-28.

EDIT: this is the first home BYU game I attended. I had been to a couple BYU games at Utah prior to this.

8/29/91 v. Florida State in the Pigskin Classic at Anaheim Stadium. Oddly enough, FSU beat the Cougs quite handily.

It seems there are quite a few here who saw USU at their first BYU game.

My earliest memory of attending a BYU game was the battle of the kickers back in 1974 (or was it 1973?) when USU defeated BYU 9-6.

My interest in BYU football was not aroused until I got back from my mish and learned Coach Hudspeth had been replaced by an assistant, Lavell Edwards.

September 1978, Colorado state at Provo. Byu won by a bajillion or so points. I was in the stunt card section. Now THOSE were the days, my friend.

I'm guessing you were at the same game I was. I remember it being at night and thinking that it was a boring game. I also got in trouble with an usher because my friend John and I went to the top of the stadium and we started spitting at the people below.

Probably late 60s and Arizona State was in town. Our ward youth had received a batch of tickets to the game and my father was a YM's leader, so he took me along as well even though I was just a little kid. It was super cold with even snow on the ground. We dutifully took our seats in the nose bleed section, but because it was so cold and BYU was so pathetic and ASU was going to kill us, attendance was way down and we looked odd all by ourselves up there. The cheerleaders came up and asked us to move down closer to the action. My dad talked about how ASU had some very fast receivers, so that would be a problem for BYU (some things never change). We had no expectation of winning and ASU killed us. ASU was the king of the WAC back then. We left early because it was so cold. I remember riding home with 3-4 YW in the back seat singing the latest tunes. That was fun.

Had I known you were there, I would have made an effort to say hi. But then, I don't think I would have recognized you without a "My kids and my money go to Utah" shirt.

I don't know why anyone would have had a problem with kids doing what kids do back then. It was before the stadium was expanded and it's not like the spit had that far to fall.

I remember that game well. I had high expectations for that team, coming off the Cotton Bowl victory. My recollection is that BYU moved the ball down the field on the opening drive pretty easily. TD. My buddy and I (who now claims Ute fandom) were jumping up and down, high fiving, and talking about a national championship. Nobody could stop this offensive machine!

Washington turned around and went the length of the field, lickity split. TD. And again. And again.
