Marcus Lattimore and Dupree

    Marcus Lattimore and Dupree

    I'm sure most on here don't remember Marcus Dupree (unless you watch 30 for 30). Dupree was arguably one of the best HS RBs of all time, and Barry Switzer labeled him the best athlete he ever coached. After a remarkable career at Oklahoma, he went t the USFL, then had a devastating knee injury. He was never the same. After a couple of pedestrian years with the Rams, he faded into relative obscurity.

    After seeing the explosion of Lattimore's knew yesterday, I'm afraid his career arc will be an abbreviated version of Dupree's. Obviously, medical treatment and therapy have advanced light years since 1984. I think the best case scenario for Lattimore is what happened to Willis Mcgahee -another amazing talent who had a sickening knee injury- and go on to have a slightly above average NFL career.

    I feel bad for the kid, he and his mom were devastated yesterday. That is the reason I never begrudge any of these kids leaving school early. If Lattimore was eligible, he likely would have been competing against Trent Richardson for the 1st RB drafted, last year. Now his best case scenario is a mid round draft choice in 2014!

    Lattimore's knee yesterday was effing disgusting.

      His obvious mental anguish was just as sickening. He worked so hard and was beyond consolation yesterday.

        That 30 for 30 episode ("the best that never was") on Dupree was excellent. That old video of him dominating the HS game as an 8th-grader was incredible.

          The first game I ever went to, Dupree was on the field. He actually only played one season for Oklahoma, but he sure made a name for himself, and he's still revered as a legend around these parts.

            Have you seen that 30 for 30 episode? I was blown away by the story on the recruiting battle. That Oklahoma recruiter (and several others) basically just moved to his hometown to set up a permanent recruiting base. And the cash, cars, etc. flowed like manna from heaven.

              Willis McGahees injury almost looked identical.

              I hope for the guy that he can have a similar return and career.

              If he can't play again I hope SC takes care of the dude.

                  After the McGahee injury, I remember reading that he would be ok financially becaise he took out a multi-million dollar insurance policy that would pay out if he sustained an injury that prevented him from playing in the NFL. Does anyone know how common those policies are for college stars or how much they cost?

                    They are fairly common and I believe the NCAA has an exception that allows for special treatment for loans to get such policies.

                      I will never ever watch Lattimore's injury. I sure hope he can at least recover enough to walk normally.

                        I was working around the house while the game was on and just happened to sit down just in time for the replay.

                        4 torn ligaments and a broken femur... I feel real bad for him.

                            Where did you see/hear that? ESPN reporting it as a dislocated knee with some ligament damage, and no fractures.

                              I thought it looked like he broke his tib/fib, but either way there was extensive ligament damage.
                              Will donate kidney for B12 membership.
