I think there is a very good chance, even a high probability (I'm sure pelagenius will prove why I'm wrong, but still), both BYU and Utah will be be primarily also-rans, for most of the decade. Though one, or both schools, will be highly ranked early in a few seasons, once both get into the meat of their schedule, I predict they will struggle most years. Though it's not really going out on a limb, I'm will to bet neither team ends the season in the top 10, during twentyeens.
I can easily see (the state of) Utah becoming like Arizona- both schools consistently thinking this is the year they do something special only to play the top tier teams, and tumble back to reality. Or worse, like Washington- One school thinking "this is the year" we are back in the top 5 and the other thinking this is the year we are competitive again (who is Udub and who is Wazzu, is debatable).
As someone who has been completely average, at everything, his whole life, I can tell you mediocrity is much easier to deal with, when you accept it. We (BYU and Utah) are, who we are. And the reality is neither team is nowhere close, and likely won't be for a long time, an elite program.
