After watching bsu yesterday, I think they have just as much shot there as yesterday. Should get USU, should get OSU, but guess that can change based on how we play in the coming weeks, ND is tough and I don't see us winning there, GT looks great and I can't see a win there. Our D will keep us in games and they were the best squad, offense or defense, on the field yesterday, without question.

My thoughts on your thoughts. It's pretty interesting the parallels between to two programs.Originally posted by jay santos View Postrandom thoughts:
Agreed.--This was a game between two pretty average teams, maybe #40 vs #50 and #40 won.
Ditto Utah.--Our offense is pretty lousy.
It seems as if some programs have inexplicable ineffective "pet plays." Ludwig had the reverse. Now Utah has the ridiculous Wilson package. Do coaches see something that everyone else misses?--We're not an option team, that's a horrible play.
Isn't it insane that both Utah and BYU are basically staring down the same barrel?--Whit's a defensive genius, but he doesn't have a good offensive coaching staff right now. He appears to have made a huge mistake with Brian Johnson. You can't afford to have a three year learning curve with a rookie OC when you're in the heart of your coaching career.
Well, I guess our QB hope of the future isn't a 23 year old RM freshman, but I think a lot of people are pinning their hopes on a very young kid that is a freshman this year. Both programs seem to have bungled the management and recruitment of the QB position in the past few years.--It really sucks to be in a position to be hoping a freshman RM is going to save our program next year after three years of lousy offense.
That's kind of what Utah is right now in the PAC. Except with a better bowl game destination at the end.--We've basically become New Mexico circa late 90's. Boring as hell, offense sucks, but always have a chance to win due to their D.
I don't think things are nearly as dire for BYU vis a vis the rivalry, fans and recruiting as you think. I doesn't seem that independence has helped BYU recruiting, but is it really and worse than before? BYU still has tons of fans. They aren't going to go away as long as BYU is playing football. Utah's fan base is growing, but I don't think it's a zero sum game. You've got to remember the population growth in Utah over the past 10 or 15 years. A lot of that is non-LDS and from out of state. I'd venture to guess, because of population growth, BOTH fan bases have actually grown over that 10 to 15 year period.--Utah has out recruited us for a decade. They're BCS. Their fan base is improving. Ours is deteriorating. The programs have flipped and I don't see much in our near future to do anything about it.

BYU has a good defense.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostWe have Boise state, Utah state, Oregon state, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech in the next six games. Should we go one and five, no one is going to be talking about finishing strong. So you can stop with that.
Those would be a tough 5 games for just about any team.
USU is going to be a hard fought game, could go either way."We should remember that one man is much the same as another, and that he is best who is trained in the severest school."

I'm not sure that John White is actually Utah's best offensive player. I have strong suspicions that we have a WR or two that might actually be more talented but are vastly underutilized because of the poor QB.Originally posted by Hsaru View PostJust a reminder we lost to a Utah team starting a d3 qb, missing their best offensive player by far, missing their two starting safeties with some NFL talent. And a team that gave up 400 yards of offense to USU.
John White is the best offensive player because 1) He is very good and 2) He's the only guy that Utah is able to easily put the ball in his hands.

I've never felt like Bronco is a winner. He just doesn't seem to have fire in the belly and neither do his teams. We had more than enough talent to beat Utah last night and we didn't. Rivalry games are tight but BYU looks like a bunch of virgins on their wedding night when they play the Utes. That's the coach's fault.

You are correct. It really sucks, doesn't it?Originally posted by Hsaru View PostJust a reminder we lost to a Utah team starting a d3 qb, missing their best offensive player by far, missing their two starting safeties with some NFL talent. And a team that gave up 400 yards of offense to USU.
Do you have a specific point to make about this?

HFN pretending BYU should hold their heads up high. If HFN was still a real BYU fan and not a condescending Oregon fan he wouldn't be saying this stuff.Originally posted by jay santos View PostYou are correct. It really sucks, doesn't it?

I think Boise is beatable after what I've seen of them this season. Don't get me wrong.Originally posted by Coach McGuirk View PostAfter watching bsu yesterday, I think they have just as much shot there as yesterday. I just think the scheduling for BYU is brutal. Boise had a tune up game yesterday. BYU had a very physically and emotionally draining game that went into the wee hours. BYU won't do much for the game today. They'll leave to go to Boise on Wednesday. Which leaves Monday and Tuesday to really prepare for Boise.
Boise, while facing a short week, will be at home and will most likely have used all yesterday afternoon, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare for the game. Boise will have twice the prep for BYU that BYU has for Boise and will be playing on their abortion of a home field. Boise won their layup game on Saturday.
I just see that as being a very, very difficult proposition for BYU due to scheduling.

I have a question for the football experts. Is it Doman that is calling for all the option plays and QB draws or is it Nelson calling audibles to those plays? Also, does the hurry-up offense require Nelson to call more audibles? At the end of the day, how much of the blame goes to Doman and how much to Nelson?"The mind is not a boomerang. If you throw it too far it will not come back." ~ Tom McGuane

Doesn't blame ultimately rest upon Doman? If Nelson isn't make the right calls, isn't it Doman's duty to correct that?Originally posted by Non Sequitur View PostI have a question for the football experts.
