  • Ricky Heimuli gets an SC offer.......

Ricky Heimuli is a D-tackle recruit out of Salt Lake. His cousin Anthony signed with BYU last year, his other cousin Latu signed with Utah. He was the defensive MVP at the US Army Junior combine last year going against the best players in the country. He has now been offered by 9 of the 10 PAC-10 schools as well as Oklahoma.

I dont think either BYU or Utah had much of a chance with him, but now with an SC offer he is as good as gone.

This reminds me of my arguments on CB with several posters, namely Ainge Era Cougar. They recruit us and all the posts about "if we get all the best LDS kids". My argument was we aren't going to get them and we better pay attention to the non-LDS kids also and find a way to recruit them and keep them in school.

I don't want to get carried away, but I think I am proven to be right. Now if BYU somehow steps it up and was reward with a BCS conf. affiliation, maybe we would get more and more of the LDS blue chippers. My guess is right now, even as good as Bronco is, he doesn't get any more or less of the best LDS kids than Lavell did.

One thing I have noticed about BYU this year in recruiting is that they are straying from the model they have used in the past. They have already offered a few non-lds kids, and they are waiting longer to offer scholarships to kids that would commit to the school on the spot. I think this is a good strategy, go after the big time recruits first because the lifelong BYU fan type of kid will be there at the end and in most cases will be fine walking on.

I don't think even that would do it. How many kids would choose a mid-to lower tier Pac-10 school over SC for example? Even if it was BYU.

I think Bronco is flexible and understands no matter what he says, his job is to win. You hear him talk in person and hear everything he says and you don't worry so much about what the press quotes.

I think it was his second year at a function he talked about the integrity first thing, but added without winning the things we espouse have no credibility. He basically told the "I would rather lose with integrity" they were full of shit. (my opinion and interpretation, he didn't say they were full of shit."

Agreed, but USC isn't the only school we lose these kids to. We lost one to ND. A big name program in the presses mind only. WE lose them to Stanford. I can't believe LDS kids choose education opportunity over spiritual growth.

This is the other aspect that zoobs tend to ignore.

If you are coming from out of state and really have no huge ties to Utah, would you rather have a degree from SC, Notre Dame, Texas, Michigan, Washington, UCLA.........or BYU/Utah?

There are other reasons beyond football to pick these BCS schools, esp if you don't know if you have a legit shot at the NFL.

ps yes, I left Oklahoma off the list.

One thing I admire about Bronco is that he does not care how big of a donor you are, he will call you out in a second. I remember the recruiting luncheon a few years ago when he was talking about all the murmuring after they went 6-6 and that his recruiting model and philosophies were all wrong and he said "Most of you in this room were the culprits". People gave an uncomfortable laugh but then he reiterated his point letting everyone know he was serious. He then went on to tell the boosters that if they let him coach and do his job he wont go there offices and try to do their jobs.

Boosters should admire a coach that isn't a kissass.

Certainly one of the things boosters should admire.
