Anyone know what plans BYU Rugby has for next year ? They like many other top notch teams have dropped out of the College Preimer Division.

Adidas just signed on to be BYU Rugbys outfitter from head to toe and they will sell BYU Rugby gear on World Rugby Shop dot com. With all this happening after BYU won the National Championship something has to be in the works ?

Variety of reasons. One being not many are even in same ballpark in terms of ability as BYU and Cal. Utah, St Marys and Ark State are right there as well.
But it cost quite a bit to travel around the country instead of having a local conference. Second, big time dissatisfaction with USA Rugby. Many feel the youth, high school and college dues are used to fund the Eagles national team and those salaries at USA Rugby. Rumors are that last years final at Rio Tinto between Cal and BYU (which had over 12,000 in attendance) left Cal and BYU with nothing from the gate. USA Rugby took all the money. Supposbly Cal's coach was livid. Cal dropped last year and now Navy and BYU among others have dropped. Something is in the works.

One more rant, ever since the ESPN deal for football BYUTv has stopped showing BYU Rugby with the exception of this years repeat broadcast of the BYU national championship match. Did ESPN put a stop to BYU Tv showing its club sports ? Non ncaa ?

I really don't think so. BYU has full re-broadcast rights to all ESPN BYU games anyway, so I don't think they nixed it for sake of eliminating competition I mean come on- it's ESPN. I think it was just a matter of programming priority. BYU has ramped up its TV production lately and now has a crap ton of shows in case you haven't noticed, many of which I'm sure draw more eyeballs than any club sport since not all of BYUTV's audience even likes sports. I really liked the spotlight on 'Low' on Audio Files, for example. Catch the lineup on BYUTV.org.

I have heard that many college teams are trying to put more emphasis on Rugby 7s programs and are dropping out of the premier division for 15s in order to do so.

7s seems to be gaining more steam in the US than 15s (at least on a collegiate level) with there being more televising of games. An entire 7s game is over in about a half-hour and you can cover an entire 7s tourney in about 3 hours on a slow sports weekend. The 7s collegiate championship was covered on network television (NBC I think?) in just that fashion a month or so ago, and I think that Cal took 3rd in it with Dartmouth taking 1st (coached by former highland high rugger Alex Magelby).

Rugby 7s will be an Olympic sport in 2016 and I think that is one major area where USA Rubgy is pushing to gain some more traction in the US.
