I still can't Google his yewt. Maybe it's because I have strict filtering on my settings.

And here, the managing expectations train is derailed...
Don't worry about people stealing your ideas. If your ideas are any good, you'll have to ram them down people's throats.

That was a really poor headline, and not what Bronco said.

As a BYU fan, you'd have to be shaking your head and wondering, "When will they learn?"

Last year, head coach Bronco Mendenhall and the team bandied about the goal of a national championship throughout media day. This year, Mendenhall highlighted all the program's accomplishments, then stated that the next goal he hopes to achieve is a year-ending top-10 national ranking.

True, but Mendenhall should know better than to say anything like that...if he's trying to manage expectations. At least he's toned the rhetoric down and instead of saying we're shooting for an NC, he lowered the expectation to just a top 10 finish and he didn't even time box it to this year either. However, the second he says something besides "one game at a time and let the season work itself out", headlines like this will appear and whip fans into a frenzy of unrealistic expectations.

Sometimes I just wish they'd say "We're doing our best to get the team ready for a strenuous year, and hope the results will reflect the level of personal comittment and effort the players have put in this offseason. Obviously we want to win all our games, but we'll just take it a week at a time and see what happens. We want to win just as much as the fans do."

It just seems like every time you put a mike in front of their mouths, they say something silly or create bulletin board material for someone.

Have to admit, I've never heard this one before:

The staff is monitoring players' diets better than at any time since he's been with the program
I want to get really excited about the coaching staff knowing what sort of food the players are eating but I don't want to set myself up for disappointment when the Washington State game rolls around and we learn that some of the players diets weren't being monitored as closely as we had been led to believe.

nothing at all. I was confused by the writing. It seems to imply that BYU accomplished the first goal on the list and is now moving on to the second goal. Don't editors catch this sort of stuff?

                        <cough, Terrence Brown, cough>

He could hardly bend over to hike it.

Of course, after he was done using up a scholarship, he was more than willing to get in to good shape to try out for the NFL.

There isn't anything wrong with that. Goals are goals, not predictions. Only people who are dumb or deliberately obtuse would take that comment to mean that fans should expect a top 10 season this year.

If Bronco said that the goal was a top 25 finish, then people would burn him at the stake for being satisfied with the status quo. My guess is that a segment of the fanbase will still go after him for not being more ambitious than the top 10.

I didn't hear Bronco say anthing about a NC, top-10 finish, or even a predicted number of wins when talking specifically about his team for this coming year. His comments about overall goals for the program came when discussing the state of the program and the future of college football/BCS.

I'm ok with it from the standpoint of marketing to the fanbase as a somewhat reasonable step forward but I'm not sure this current team is even in the neighborhood of top 25, let alone Top 10.

I blame the MLM environment for BYU's continued propensity to mismanage expectations year in and year out. Quest For Perfection? I still can't forgive them for that one. The spin the school put out following the first loss only compounded the problem further. Then the year after QFP we get this from Bronco: "I think we've moved on from slogans."

PU is right, BYU can't help but mismanage expectations.

I'm getting the feeling it isn't BYU that is doing the mismanaging here.
