Bronco before marriage/BYU was more like his wilder brothers than what he has become. I think in making the, "mighty change" at BYU and in the public eye he's struggled with his public persona. I've been around Bronco when he's let his hair down a bit and he's a much more relaxed and playful person. I think his players get to see this side of him daily while the rest of us don't. It's the reason hs players respect him to the degree they do.Originally posted by Surfah View PostI have heard from more than one person now that Bronco is genuinely weird. Not just awkward like he comes across in interviews, but weird.
Other than Jake, what highly recruited player has Bronco mishandled? Also encouraging walk-ons isn't a bad thing. Chad Lewis, Dennis Pitta, Andrew Rich, Scott Johnson, and JD Falslev were all walk-ons. There are a number of JC transfers (who I consider similar to a walk-on) that have also made big impacts.

I am not sure I have ever seen a coach as successful as Bronco despised by his own fans this much.
I like Bronco, he is quirky and a little odd. But overall he is a good head coach and one of the top defensive coordinators in the country.
The talent that he has brought in has never been this good at BYU and it seems to be only getting better. Yes I hate how he plays the practice squad heroes year in and year out, his media interviews are always boring, and of course we are all tired of hearing about hte time he got booed in his first game. But he is successful has won a lot of games over his first 7 years. I don't see it slowing down any either.
I think Doman is pretty much the coach in waiting. He is obviously not ready yet. I hope Bronco gives us 5-6 more solid seasons and then rides off in to the sunset. I never thought he was a lifer.*Banned*

For all of my bitching about Bronco I agree. He is a great hire at BYU and I am not sure we could do better. I have no clue where are next coach would come from (Utah?Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostI am not sure I have ever seen a coach as successful as Bronco despised by his own fans this much.

Honestly I hope Sitake leaves Utah and proves that he can run a defense without Whit. If he does that it wouldn't surprise me if he came back to BYU as the head coach assuming the job is not Domans.Originally posted by Surfah View PostFor all of my bitching about Bronco I agree. If he would have gone to Hawaii and been sucessful that would have propelled him to a higher profile job than BYU. I am glad he didn't get the job. Now we just need him to leave Utah as DC and go somewhere else.*Banned*

I think you need to drop the term despised or attribute it to a "few fans".Originally posted by cougjunkie View PostI am not sure I have ever seen a coach as successful as Bronco despised by his own fans this much.

I think Bronco is a good coach. I know the players that last have a great deal of respect for him. His attitude toward fans who aren't on board with everything he does is abrasive and thus their non love for a coach with his record.
It can't be just me and some of my friends who are dealing with this by not listening or watching coaches shows. That is one reason why when I quoted him, I made the mistake of not knowing whether the quote was recent or two years ago.Last edited by byu71; 01-12-2012, 08:01 AM.

I don't despise Bronco at all. If Bronco left we would be screwed. We are lucky to have him and I pray that he does stay for at least 5 more years. The young LDS coaches in the BYU hiring pool need time and I don't like an inordinate amount of on-the-job training.Dyslexics are teople poo...

Agree. I don't like everything he does. He drives me bonkers with his media interviews. But overall, I give high approval rating and hope he stays for a long time. If you've got at least an average coach, continuity in a program is important.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI don't despise Bronco at all. If Bronco left we would be screwed. Sometimes I think a burning down of the forest is healthy as it lets the saplings grow and whatnot. Then I recall that the heavy whining about Bronco started in about 2008 and we were 4 years removed from witnessing Crowton as the HC. I conclude that I don't want BYU to suck again because sometimes I wonder if I am a lone voice that remembers our sucking and how easy it is for teams to suck.Originally posted by Flystripper View PostI don't despise Bronco at all. I'm choosing to mostly ignore your fatuity here and instead overwhelm you with so much data that you'll maybe, just maybe, realize that you have reams to read on this subject before you can contribute meaningfully to any conversation on this topic.

I, too, remember our suckitude. I do not wish to return to BYU football circa 2003.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostSometimes I think a burning down of the forest is healthy as it lets the saplings grow and whatnot. It would help if AD and HC would stop promoting the idea we are one of the big boys and then the fans would settle into accepting what is, is. We are like unto the academies, well AF with a bigger fan base.Originally posted by Goatnapper'96 View PostSometimes I think a burning down of the forest is healthy as it lets the saplings grow and whatnot. We are at the upper level of the non BCS schools. Which by the way is better program wise than the lower level of the BCS schools.
