I was texting some folks throughout to give them updates because he said a lot of stuff that I thought was really fascinating, especially one of the reasons for his "health-related" absence.

I spoke with him briefly afterward and was able to ask him a question that I've wondered about for quite some time (it was a respectful question) and he was really gracious.

This was on Friday afternoon. He said he was leaving the conference to go work out at the U and then have dinner with Whit. Imagine being one of the new Utah football players at the facilities on a Fri afternoon and in walks Urb. That would be pretty wild.
I'd love to hear more about the "Health related" thing... And the question you asked him.

            http://www.buckeyextra.com/content/s...ot-losers.html

No sugar-coating. No diplomacy. No hedging. Meyer’s approach is Darwinian. It’s you against the other guy, and you better win.

So it will be for his players when spring practice opens in two weeks. If the Buckeyes expect the 3½ weeks of practice to be a feeling-out period between Meyer and a mostly new coaching staff, forget it. There will be a lot of hitting, Meyer said. There will be winners and losers and little gray area.

“(I’ll) put them in environments and situations where I want to see who the fighters are, who’s going to compete,” Meyer said yesterday at a news conference to discuss spring practice. “There’ll be rewards at the end of the day.

“You can get off the field with Gatorade if you win. If not, you drink out of a water hose and do some running, and that includes the coaches.”

            Can't wait for spring practice..

Very candid review of the team by Urban.. I LOVE IT!! One quote that has me very excited is how he plans on using the TE and FB more in the offense..

Those positions are great right now. Stoneburner (6-5', 245) Fragle (6-8', 280).. FB Boren is a beast (6-0', 252)!!!

              http://www2.nbc4i.com/sports/2012/ma...2811-vi-38856/

Another interesting comment is the "Heart-to-Heart" he had with Bri'Onte Dunn. I guess Bri'onte was wanting to take a trip to UM, and Urban said point plank o him.. "You better like it if you go there". In essence, he wasn't going to hold his schollie.. Now, I am not sure I like that tactic but it goes to the heart of the rivalry and we got Bri'onte so it worked.... Urban is building a massive fence around Ohio again.. And it is night and day between him and Tressel.. NIGHT & DAY..

Comment from a current player on the roster from a covnersation a buddy of his had with him..

I had the privilege to talk with one of the current players about the differences between Coach Meyer's program and Coach Tressel's. His exact words is that Meyer and Marotti are "kicking our asses" and that the team has never come close to working this hard in the offseason. According to him, the players on the team are going out at night far less in fear of literally dying in the weight room the next day. Meyer made it clear that he wont tolerate bull[Mark May], and if any players aren't on board, the door is wide open. He also said that while it "sucks now," he knows that it will pay huge dividends on the field. I'll talk to him during/after spring practice starts and give you guys some more details.

Nice article by a former player..

                http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2012/0...he-alpha-males

I absolutely love the edge to the new staff. I'm sure there is a more eloquent way to put this but I am a novice writer so here you go: It is a staff of alpha males. They are young and hungry and there is no dead weight.

There is a feeling, I believe, that it is no longer an "old boys network" to getting a job at Ohio State. We can demand the best and if you're not cutting it, someone else will.

There is a competition and rivalry again between the offensive and defensive staffs and it is intense and relentless. Believe me when I say that mentality transfers down to the players. Fred Pagac was one of my favorite coaches and he exuded this. He would yell and nearly come to blows with offensive staff members during competitions. You could tell he would put pads on and get in there if he could (some of the current staff certainly can) and it made you want to succeed. When players and coaches train like gladiators, you are not just creating a team mentality but a losing will not be tolerated culture.

There is a level of intensity that is palpable at the Woody, and it is great to have that feeling again from everyone. Let's face it, last year was embarrassing. The new staff is dead-set on not allowing something like that to happen again and Urban and his coaches have made it clear to the football alumni that the pride and tradition of The Ohio State University football program will be restored, sooner rather than later.

March 28th is the day it all begins..

It will be interesting how impenetrable that fence Urban is building will be. It's not just Michigan and other bordering states that want in, it's also Nebraska. Ohio St. will always have an advantage in signing in-state talent but Bo Pelini knows Ohio well and Nebraska is looking for new hunting grounds now that the Cornhuskers are not playing in Texas annually. From the current Husker roster:

I think only McMullen had an offer from tOSU so I'm not saying that Nebraska will out recruit Ohio St. on their home turf. But I do know Nebraska will fish there because of the talent pool. Looking forward to 10/6/2012 in The Horseshoe.

While it might be premature to draw conclusions, Urban seems to be doing anything but erecting a fence around Ohio. Tressel did to some extent, especially when RR was around, who did a lot of recruiting in Florida and elsewhere. Urban seems to be trying a similar strategy in going after national recruits, and is losing a lot of the ones in Ohio.

I assume that Urban will have a lot more luck recruiting nationally than RR did, but meanwhile Michigan's already got 7 commits from Ohio, including the #1 S, DE, and LB.

I tried to find where I said that but couldn't I have a feeling it was a response the speech he gave to the Ohio High School Football Association Conference he spoke at.. I remember he made a comment that he was not going to let the top kids leave and bring them to Ohio St. etc..

Yes, I think Pelini does bring something new to the table and it can get interesting up in the Youngstown area which is where Pelini is from.

I guess a "Large fence around Ohio" is a broad brush because kids will go elsewhere every year. But are the top kids in Ohio going to Ohio St. is the key. Will Urban be able to keep them each year.. Thsi also may be hard due to the reduction of Schollie the next few years. He will have to be selective..

See my response above as well.....

One question. These kids you speak of are they in the 2012 or 2013 recruiting class??

If they are for the 2012 recruiting class, we are pretty loaded at DE, LB (Nationally higher ranking by kids who just came in the 2012 recruiting class). The #1 S who got away is interesting but is more than likely not a need.. I'll have to look that up..

If they are for the 2013 recruiting class then I think it might be premature to assume they will remain committed.. A lot can happen in a year..

This was his first year of recruiting (And he had less than 2 months to recruit and brought in a Top 3 recruiting class). We'll see how it pans out over the next few years..

I'm referring to 2013. I neglected to mention Ohio's #1 RB, who is also committed. Some are speculating that Urban thinks that last season's strategy of swooping in at the end and grabbing whomever he wants from other schools will work. I very much doubt it. PSU had a lot of kids probably hoping for an opportunity to get out last year, and Urban was a new hire. Urban doesn't have that excuse anymore.

The 2013 kids that have gone to Michigan are unlikely to decommit. Many of them already had OSU offers before they committed to Michigan for one thing. If he doesn't recruit kids hard, they are likely to resent it if he shows up late after missing on his preferred out-of-state recruits. I'm sure he'll try, and he might even have a bit of success, but Hoke doesn't even allow commits to visit other schools and is very clear with recruits that when they commit that's it.

As a side note, it's fun to see all the early 2013 commits helping to recruit other guys, showing up to campus to hang out with each other, and staying in contact via Twitter and whatnot. That can't hurt the effort to avoid decommits either.

I don't mean for any of this to sound like typical rivalry bullshit, as I generally hate that stuff. I don't hate Urban and I don't hate OSU. I also expect Urban to do well in recruiting and on the field. While his recruiting strategy thus far is pretty high-risk, he's one of the few for whom a national recruiting strategy will probably pay off.

Woot. I have never pegged you as a Rivalry smack type of guy. All of our conversations have been very cordial...

Part of me wonders if he has not gone after these guys hard is due to the current DE, LB's, and RB we just got (Dunn). These guys will be around a few years..

I have to say. Over the past few months it is interesting to see that we do not have many commits as of yet. Is that because Urban does not want to give up his Schollies just yet in order to see how things pan out closer to LOI day.. This might be good, but could cause him to lose some kids. We'll see how things go. If Ohio St. has a stellar season next year I expect the frenzy to pick up again..
