To allow his readers to empathize with the mental anguish inflicted on Jake Heaps, Dick Harmon mentioned Nelson's teenage sister heckling Heaps's wife. This heckling was too much for Heaps after BYU told him that he could not, under any circumstances throw in the middle of the field, that he must check down and that he must throw ground balls to his receivers and running backs.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Throwing people under the bus? Bias? Calling people out? Sensationalism? Go read some new York sports media. This isn't nightly news. The main question is whether his story is true. For those that are asking how this story "got past" the editor, my guess is because the editor also believes it is true. Shocker.

The legit complaint to be made here against Harmon is that he writes these sorts of exposes far too infrequently, not that he writes them at all. He is the beat writer, so give us the juice. What is going on inside the program? What is the inside scoop?

"oh, I'm so mad because we found out that O Neil Chambers threw Jakes stuff on the locker room floor. How unfair. Why didn't anyone represent Oneills side of the story? What bias!"

                    Oh, brother.
                    This isn't New York.

What Harmon wrote was misleading and painted, at least initially, an entire family as cads when, if the incident is indeed true, only one member of the family showed bad judgement. When the article was first published online someone at the DNews took the paragraph in question out of the article. It was then re-inserted. The print edition had the disclaimer stating that it wasn't Riley's parents. Clearly someone at the DNews, at least initially, didn't meet the muster. I'll stand by my opinion that that part of the article, even if true, was unnecessary and showed poor judgement by the writer.

                      There you go.

Hey Dick, next time you do an article on Doman, why not throw in a little tidbit about how the other coach's wives think his wife wears ugly clothes? Or maybe you could dig up some dirt on Jake's parents' divorce. Bonus points for rumors of abuse or infidelity. By golly, this is what they would do in New York. Inquiring minds want to know.

Misleading to whom? The paragraph was taken out as a knee jerk reaction to this nonsense about made up standards of journalism. Thank goodness it was put back in. What rule of journalism was broken? Please enlighten. Unless she is a victim of a sex crime, what is the relevance of her age? Her age or gender wasn't even an issue in the story. Just her relationship to Nelson...she is a relative and was described as such.

Again, Harmon screwed up by not writing more of these tell alls more frequently. He screwed up by not calling out BYU more regularly. He screwed up by not calling out underperforming players more regularly. He screwed up by bending to message board pressure and tweeting clarifications about his article. He screwed up by relying on IndyCoug for information that IndyCoug revealed against confidences that he promised to maintain. In short, he is a crappy beat writer because he fails to walk the beat, not because he wrote an unflattering sentence about Nelsons relatives.

This is a strawman. If Harmon writes an article about Doman and inserts irrelevant information, then an editor will chop it out. If Harmon writes an article about Doman leaving in part because he felt unsupported here and Harmon cites to your anecdotes as examples of such lack of support, an editor will try to determine whether the anecdotes are true or false. If the editor believes the,m to be true and relevant, they stay in the article.

Of course inquiring minds want to know. What nonsense. Heaps just transferred. Make up your mind, do you want Harmon to cover the beat or not?

The problem isn't that Harmon went too far, it's that he didn't go far enough.
