I know Hawaii is a nice vacation spot which I would love, but this doesn't make sense at all from a financial standpoint. Armed Forces/Hawaii Bowl payout is almost the same (50,000 extra for the Hawaii Bowl), but with traveling, it would be more expensive.

That's the best thread title suggestion yet.

Let's get the hype going for this game. It's pretty obvious that we all wanted a shot at Houston, but in reality this should turn into a good revenge game for that high scoring drubbing that Tulsa put on us a couple years ago. That game was my first road trip after moving to the South and I still am not over Fowler letting so many deep balls go practically unchallenged (although Tulsa's QB was on that game).

So let's break this thing down Indy (PED) style:

                  - A straight up PED comparison favors BYU by 10.9
                  - With Heaps as the starting QB the PED actually favors Tulsa by 8.3
                  - If we only include Heaps later starts (Idaho, NMSU) then BYU is favored by 60.7 (this is skewed by the Idaho game where our D played absolutely lights out against the pass and Heaps had a great game)
                  - With Riey as the starting QB BYU is favored by 42.9
                  - If we exclude the Idaho State game then with Riley we are only favored by 17.2

The Tulsa QB (Kinne) is a 3 year starter so he's got plenty of experience. Hs rating is in the 140s so he's about average for college taking into consideration the fact that Tulsa has played some bad teams this year. Bottom line is that he's better than any of the Hawaii QBs we faced so we'll likely need more than Jackson Brown to win this game.

Kinne also seems to be a decent runner. He's not a run first type guy but he can move and get yards or extend plays when needed. He's got a similar yards per carry average as Godfrey (UCF) so he might give us fits like Godfrey did.

Although this is not a sexy opponent, it would be nice to beat Tulsa handily going into the spring so we can t least be excited for next year much the way that the UTEP beating last year work us all up into a frenzy.

I'm going to predict this game stays close for 3 quarters and BYU pulls away late to win by 14 points.

You can edit your post to exclude the Heaps PED numbers.

I know I can but thanks for pointing that out

Another interesting stat for QB comparison is redzone pass efficiency which is:

                          Heaps 153.55
                          Nelson 228.40

This stat is expected to be higher than normal pas efficiency because of the high amount of touchdowns but it's interesting to see that Nelson is lights out better in the redzone. That running amity is obviously a factor here as its just one more thing for the LBs to cover, opening up routes in th emiddle of t he field.

By way of contrast, Kinne's redzone efficiency is 171.18

Does anyone know if BYU got less money than the Armed Forces Bowl normally gives out to a team? I heard that because of money less than half the band is coming to the bowl game. I thought this independence gig was bringing lots of money. Or maybe the football team is greedy and wanted all the money.

Something to do with the average weight of the flute section and the cost of jet fuel.
