It's not so much what he's done (hell, 3 good years could be a fluke), rather the way he is doing it that puts him in my top 5.
    I'm like LeBron James.

I appreciate the love, I'll pass it on next week at Oregon Club. I think he needs the marquee OOC win, preferably in a bowl, to make a big jump.

Peterson, Saban, Fitzgerald, Meyer, Petrino & Beamer come to mind in no particular order. Briles, Stoops, Patterson, Whit, Gundy & Miles get consideration as well.

If Harbaugh was still in the game he'd be my #1 along with Saban & Meyer.

Definately....forgot about that guy. Spurrier might be considered in that same vein as well. Maybe Schiano (sp?) from Rutgers too? KSU, Rutgers & NW have no business winning more than a couple of games a year.

Les Miles' clock management became an issue all of a sudden when Gary Crowton came onto the scene and seem to have gone away when Crowton left.

I think this list starts with Saban and has to contain Meyer and Peterson. The other two spots are more up for debate but I would say Miles probably belongs on the list given the fact that he's about to win his second national championship. I also think Gary Patterson should be on the list.
Part of it is based on academic grounds. Among major conferences, the Pac-10 is the best academically, largely because of Stanford, Cal and UCLA. “Colorado is on a par with Oregon,” he said. “Utah isn’t even in the picture.”

Your five resonate most with me.

Five guys who haven't been mentioned in this thread, but who are great coaches:

              1. Brady Hoke

              2. James Franklin (Maryland looks worse and worse every day for letting him go)

              3. Lane Kiffin. There, I said it.

              4. Hugh Freeze. First-year coach at Arkansas State, goes 9-2 out the box. You might know him better as Michael Oher's high school coach from The Blind Side.

              5. Larry Fedora. Between him and Freeze, wouldn't be surprised if one was the next coach at Ole Miss.

                -Peterson is good.

-Kiffin doesn't belong on this list yet.

-Kelly does good with teams that don't have much NFL talent.

-Meyer bails when there's trouble ahead.

                -Bronco is a good GA.

                -Whit had one good season.

                -Beamer's teams are consistent.

                -Patterson is good.

-Mack Brown appears to be a fun coach to play for.

That's all for now. I'm sure you all cared about what I had to say.

Bret Bielema does a nice job up at Wisconsin. Alvarez got it going but he's kept it up.

Northwestern and Rutgers have no business losing as much as they do. Considerin theg location of the universities and the money being poured in to those schoools. Fitzgerald has been average at best. Schiano was good 4 years ago with Ray Rice and should have taken the Miami job.

People were trying to run him out of town. Talent can make even bad coaches look good. See Gary Crowton in 2001.
The fan base is largely over that one for the time being (easy when you are consensus #1). The concept generally is his luck would have run out by now, so he's not lucky, just good. I'm sure the war drums will beat during the next 7-5 year.
Awesomeness now has a name. Let me introduce myself.

I'd like to see how well Chip Kelly does at recruiting without all that Nike money pouring into the school.

I want to see these coaches actually build programs. All Les Miles, Chris Peterson, and Chip Kelly have done is keep rolling what someone else built. Peterson has had the hardest job and Miles probably the easiest.

Nick Saban has built two programs. Not that either LSU or Bama were terrible before he arrived but neither one was a legit NC contender and now they are year in and year out.

Once you become a name school and get a reputation it makes it a lot easier.

Did you really just claim that Nick Saban built Alabama?

He rebuilt Alabama that had been in the dumps for about ten years (with an occasional good year). He has a lot of resources there obviously.

Shulas last year they finished 6-7.

Before Saban they had not won an SEC championship since 1999 or a national title since 1992. So yes he rebuilt Alabama.
