  • Good luck to McBride

I will always be a Ron McBride fan. Without McBride there is no Urban and Whittingham. Without Urban and Whittingham there is no Pac-12.

He did great things for the University of Utah. 1994 was the first great Ute season in my lifetime.

Although it was the right time to move on, I always wish that it had ended differently with Ron McBride at Utah. I wish he would have accepted retirement at that time, but clearly he had some more coaching left in him. Utah St made a huge mistake when they hired Brent Guy over McBride.

Now that he is retired, it is time for Utah to honor him.

I understand your sentiments, MP, but wouldn't that be a bit awkward? What do you have in mind?
    Give 'em Hell, Cougars!!!

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Yeah, sucks to see he will not be coaching anymore, but he did amazing things for Utah football. Sucks to see Weber State struggling lately as well..., would have been cool to see him coach against BYU one more time, albeit with Weber State.

I have to laugh at myself when I think how terribly upset I became when Utah let him go after the 2002 BYU win. I turned my nose when Urban Meyer was first announced because of it (took about 3 seconds for him to win me over).

It is amazing how close his teams were to being special, but really just kept us hooked on Ron. 2002 is a great example of this. A lackluster 5-6 record on the season, with near misses on the Arizona, Michigan, Air Force, CSU, and New Mexico games. So close, yet so so far. (Though the Arizona game could have greatly benefited from today's instant replay)

Love Ron McBride - I hope he has a great retired life.

I will call him Coach. He earned that, even from a Cougar fan (I hated 34 - 31). Good Luck Coach McBride.

I said the first good season in my lifetime. I was born in 1978, so my statement stands. Nice that you can't even refrain from being an asshole in a thread dedicated to saying thanks to the coach that brought Ute football to life.

Name something in the stadium after him. How about the Ron McBride North Endzone.

How about "the first great Ute season after the advent of the multi-bar facemask"?

Utah and Ron McBride maintained a great relationship after he left. He was on the sidelines for the BYU-Utah game in '06 (I high-fived him after Wilson's TD early in the third) and they honored him before the Weber St game in '08.

I'd love to see something more permanent and long-lasting. The guy loves Utah, and the fanbase reciprocates.

What would be awkward about it? Mac still loves Utah, and he'll be the first to tell you he is still a Utah Man.

I think even Chris Hill could put aside any feelings of discomfort to bring Mac back for a day for some kind of recognition.

I have to agree with TopUte. There wouldn't be anything awkward about it. Coach Mac did some great things for the University of Utah. I think most fans want him honored in some way.

Arizona would have benefited the most from today's instant replay. The play before the ruled incomplete catch happened, the Utah RB (I think it was Brandon Warfield) fumbled the ball and AZ recovered, but the officials ruled it as not a fumble.
