HL and CJ speak the truth. Bronco has done a good job with what he has. This year is a process. Frankly for this team losing to TCU is not an embarrassment. A couple of better decisions by Riley or maybe one less fumbled punt and BYU takes that game.

There's a pretty big connection between fumbled punts, qb's who don't know what they're doing, wasted timeouts, half ending meltdowns, special teams idiocy (and on and on and on . . . .) and the head coach.

I'm not saying Bronco doesn't do dumb stuff. However I like to take a much longer view when judging players and coaches. I think Bronco has done a pretty nice job on the whole.

It is Bronco's job as long as he wants it. He has been fine. Actually he has been much better than fine. I do think he has slipped a bit during this year and last year. IMHO his slips are related to hiring/promotion decisions related to OC and DC and poor preparation in some of BYU's biggest games. There are some talent problems at key positions but you can't say that recruiting has been the problem at QB. Maybe RB has been a decent sized recruiting screw up but that is about it.

I just don't think the fans we do anything like that, though.

I'm going to disagree here. First, BYU realizes that all this exposure doesn't help if BYU doesn't win games. Further, ESPN, with their investment in BYU, is not going to allow BYU to keep a coach whose teams aren't performing on the field. Not to mention, BYU's coaches salaries are becoming dependent on the Coach's Circle donations -- if those donors aren't happy and donating (and it has taken a hit this fall, between the football team and the Big 12 drama), BYU pretty much has to make a switch.

While BYU loves Bronco for his "mission president" persona, he won't fair any better than Crowton (with the off field problems) if his teams keep looking poorly coached.

If this change is coming soon I'd nominate MarkGrace as OC and Shaka as QB coach. Then I could post stuff about tension on the staff over Riley Nelson.

How much do you think ESPN has invested in BYU? Do you notice other teams on ESPN in addition to BYU? ESPN has contracts with a lot of teams and conferences in a lot of sports. I don't think they're in the business of telling the teams when to fire their coaches so they can make more money on their contract.

The difference is, ESPN doesn't have contracts with individual schools, other than BYU, that guarantees them games on ESPN/ESPN2. Instead, there contract is with conferences, so most of those schools can go into the toilet and it won't hurt ESPN, they will just pick the teams in that school's conference that are playing well.

And I'm not saying that ESPN will tell BYU to fire the coach but, from my recollection, Dave Brown during the Independence press conference (I believe in answer to a question) did, in a diplomatic way, say that ESPN would take action to protect their investment in BYU.

The guy is a good coach and has turned BYU around. But to address ONE of the elephants in the room, is he the guy to follow through with his comments that he wants the Coogs to compete for a BCS game? He will make a great GA (boring talks and all), but I don't see the great coach part yet.

And please don't talk about record. Who has BYU beat? Any of them better than 500? Just compare Utah and BYU as we like to do around here. Utah is a better football team (not 44 points better, but that is another discussion) but, the records both team current have sure doesn't show that.
