  • What are we arguing about? If a spike was called intentional grounding it would be loss of down at the spot or a loss of maybe two yards. Without a penalty it's just the down that is lost. Not a big difference or a huge favor bestowed on the offense.

There is a minimum 10-yard penalty allotted to intentional grounding. If it's from beyond 10 yards, then it's a spot foul. Huge difference if a FG is in play.

I didn't know that. I thought it was always a spot foul in college after the rule change. What you explained makes more sense.

Clarification: I got my interpretation from the NFL rule book. The college game's rules obviously differ from the NFL's in some spots, but I doubt this is one of them.

EDIT: Apparently it is different. In the college game, intentional grounding is just loss of down, from the spot of the foul.

            • A "deceiving the defense" penalty should have been called, no doubt about it. There you go, TU. loophole closed.

Is that the one BYU got called against them in the Max Hall/Utah game?

                  • I've been waiting for someone to throw the "fake spike TD" ever since Marino did it. I think I've seen it attempted a handful of times without success.
                  • There is no such thing as a "pussy touchdown" when someone is getting getting paid millions to stop you.
                  • I have no problem with it at the college level either. You're in college. You should be smart enough to know that guys might trick you.
                  • I would say it would be OK to ban it below high school.
                  • This is as bad a conversation as RUTS.

I'm not really sure of the rationale of the "deceive the defense" call on Max. If there is a concrete rule against the QB faking like he's setting up the offense while the center snaps it to an up back, then ok. I don't know if there is. Normally I'd be more upset about it, but since it was on BYU, I'm pretty relaxed about that call.

Seriously. I didn't even realize there was a fake spike. I had to watch a few times to be sure. Even still, it was so subtle, I doubt it fooled anyone. The defender on Hoffman sure didn't seem affected by it as evidenced by him running with/defending Hoff.

Shouldn't there be some sort of penalty on the defense when the LBs fake the blitz by lining up right behind the line only to drop back into coverage after the snap? Seems very deceptive to me.

There wasn't a penalty on that. It was a TD. DDD got into the old lady's face behind us after that play and taunted her about it.
