We could spout all kinds of academic achievements from the U, but in all likelihood you would just denigrate and belittle them. But the truth is that while football revenue is important to a school and conference, there are other, much larger, factors at play that we just don't comprehend. Academic priorities are much different than anything out in the "professional" world.

So, while I could go off and specifics (research grant dollars, academic ranking by publications, Nobel prize winners, specific medical and technical achievements, technology converted into business, etc), you probably wouldn't think any one of them are important, and in a roundabout way you'd be right. It isn't any one of them that made the conference heads spin and say "We need those guys!", but the sum of the whole.
There's only one reason you got it and we didn't: we are LDS-owned.

I really would love to see the data. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. Unlike Seattle Ute, I have no affinity for error.

      How is this for DATA?

Ah, now we get down to the basis of your argument. I'm sure that is a factor, but not directly.

In reality, joining a conference is a bit like going into business together in that you have to be able to get along with each other on a cultural level.

Does the fact that the LDS Church owns BYU directly impact them in a negative way in this regard? I don't think so. The church administration is full of Nice Guys and Smart People (since a majority of them are Ute graduates ). I think the problems stem more from coordinating schedules (sunday play), academic freedom, and a lack of post-graduate success. All of those issues are a by-product of being LDS owned and the goals of the LDS church as a whole. None of those things are priorities to the church.

When all is said and done, this is a business, and you have to be able to have similar goals, which can be a bit tricky when dealing with BYU.

Does the fact that the conference heads didn't want to partner up with an organization that doesn't align with how they see the world automatically make them "Anti-LDS"? That's pretty narrow minded if you think so. You can't hold yourself up to a different set of standards then complain when people don't agree with your standards.

Only because you know that there will never be a published checklist, so you are free to continue to your persecution complex rather than try to think about it from a rational level. That's your right though, so feel free to continue.

The "Trojan horse" busted the BCS twice in the last ten years and appeared in the Final Four once in the last 15.

What has the supposedly greater institution done in that time frame? One sweet 16.

Col. Klink: "Staff officers are so clever."
Gen. Burkhalter: "Klink, I am a staff officer."

Predictable: if only Riley had played against the Utes instead of Heaps. It was only a matter of time, before this (if only my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle) weasel logic.

Riley did play a series or two against Utah's backups. With Riley in the game BYU scored zero points, but he did give up another fumble and TD to a Utah against a lineman wo easily ran a 5.8 forty, but at least Riley efforted to make a tackle.

              • Viking's Trojan Horse analogy confirms for me that BYU doesn't much teach the humanities. He doesn't even know what the Trojan Horse is.

I was puzzled by that simile, as well.

Flattop also employed a similar usage so it makes me wonder if he really reads all those military books he claims to read or if he is just full of crap.

The vast majority of our alumni base is from locales other than Utah and as your base is basically Utahn, what's the point? None of us (the non-Utahns) care about Utah.
For someone who doesn't care about Utah, you sure spend a lot of time talking about them.

                        No, this is a university.

Why not? Is this how non-LDS folks "should" behave in Utah? Do they?

Actually, it's driven more by my significant dislike for SU.
