  • Wynn out 2-3 weeks at least

    http://utahutes.cstv.com/sports/m-fo...100311aae.html

2-3 weeks before being reevaluated sounds an awful lot like "season ending" to me.

This really sucks. Wynn performance in the first half Saturday was the first time that I have felt that he was comfortable with the game, his health, his psyche since the Iowa St. game last year. ANd then he is gone.

This is going to be a long season. I was happy with 7 wins or more this season. Right now 6 is looking like a huge stretch. Our coaches need to fix our damn QB recruiting. We are going to be struggling next year as well as we don't have established QB in this program. It is looking like Wilson is going to be the guy next year as a freshman.

Because Wynn won't be able to play next year? I would think you would rather go with a known Wynn and let Wilson learn the college game than throwing him to the dogs.

MP you are correct in stating the QB recruiting situation is in trouble because it is a rolling accumulation. We are earning the dividends of not bringing in a decent QB a few years ago.

We should be OK in a year or so with Wilson and then Chase Hansen. We need to pick up several more like him though.

Also I sincerely hope we are not forced to play T.Wilson next year. It seems very few QBs are truly ready for the rigors as true freshmen. Even Tom Brady wasn't much to write home about when he was in college.

I would much rather have Wynn as the starter next year than Wilson, but I'm skeptical of Wynn staying healthy at this point. I just get the feeling that the guys career is over.

The Utah County kid that was moved to LB was a pretty good QB recruit. Griff Robles, I think.

                  Utah's QB recruiting:

                  2012:

Chase Hansen: most likely not a QB
Travis Wilson: probably the best guy we have signed since Whittingham was coach

                  2011:

None: with the current state of our QBs not signing one in 2011 was a huge problem

                  2010

                  Brian Blechen
                  Tyler Shreve

                  2009

                  Terrance Cain
                  Jordan Wynn

                  2008

Devonte Christopher: not really a QB but he was listed as one

                  2007

Chad Manis: failed at QB and ended up at LB
Courbin Louks: another guy that really had no business as a QB
Griffin Robles: this was Ludwig's guy that he sold out for and he failed at QB and changed positions

                  2006

                  None

Whittingham has been a very good coach for Utah, but the QB recruiting under his watch has put us in the current situation that we are in. I'm really concerned about the number of empty years in the QB recruiting and years where the QBs we did sign are not really QBs. I have no problem with the sign athletes at QBs to move them to other positions, but you do have to actually recruit QBs as well.

He was Ludwig's guy that he sold out for and was another misread by Ludwig. Ludwig's only recruiting assignment when he was here was QBs. He sure did a great job with that and his influence is still being felt with his piss poor QB recruiting. I really don't like Andy Ludwig.

that's the risk you take, when you give the starting job to a freshman, like Utah did with Wynn. Pretty tough to recruit to a position that essentially would be occupied for the next 4 years, unless your looking at 15 year olds.

Oh yeah, and also Blechen and DVC were QBs in high school. But they are probably better in their current positions.

edit: this is essentially what MP and Scorcho said.

The QB recruiting has been poor since Urban left. Ratliff and Wynn might be the lone exceptions. Really, Brian Johnson was a 2003 recruit, right?

Think about that. In 8 years, 2 decent QBs. Now, I think Wynn could have been very good but for the injuries. Rat was a JC guy that was inconsistent.

Keep in mind, Urban inherited a program that had Brett Elliot and Alex Smith.

Mac was even a better recruiter of QBs than Whit and Co.

I'd like to hang my hopes on Chow turning things around, but he's only going to be here maybe a few years. Is that enough time to change the culture of the program? To make Whit realize that QB is the most important position on the field? Right now, it would seem that Whit doesn't believe QB is of utmost importance or, at worst, the importance of QBs to the game annoys him.

One could argue that Brian Johnson outside of the game ending drives vs. TCU and OSU, the BYU game and the Sugar Bowl was not really a fantastic QB either. He was inconsistent as well. Some of that can be pinned on Ludwig, but how long are we going to blame Ludwig, Shramroderick and maybe even Chow for the incosistency at QB? When do we actually start scrutinizing the recruiting of the position?
