Hmmm, this is interesting. New scripted drama that gets a thumbs up from Scott Pierce.

lol, the douche with the braided leather belt and jorts from Napoleon Dynamite plays one of the Sheriff Deputies. Too bad Kirby Heyborne is too big time now to also play a role.Originally posted by Shaka View PostHmmm, this is interesting. New scripted drama that gets a thumbs up from Scott Pierce.

Actually, I was expecting the cast to be all utah locals or lame mormon movie actors. The main kid is the voice of Cubby on Jake and the Neverland Pirates! That's big time right there!Originally posted by Color Me Badd Fan View Postlol, the douche with the braided leather belt and jorts from Napoleon Dynamite plays one of the Sheriff Deputies. I saw a preview for this on byutv recently and was really turned off by the holier than thou descriptions (from the show's producers) of what the show was trying to accomplish. I don't doubt though, that byutv will be capable of putting some decent scripted shows on the air, and this may be one of them.Originally posted by Shaka View PostHmmm, this is interesting. It is pretty amazing what byutv has done in the 2 years since football independence. It was essentially an unwatchable network to a non-lds viewer, and a very limited and boring network to most lds viewers. Watching 6 CES nerds discuss the D&C for an hour at a time was prime time until a couple of years ago. The sports programming is incredibly well done and I see complimentary talk on opponents sports boards quite frequently. And prime time programming is at the very least watchable now, even to a non-lds, accidental, channel surfing viewer. Gone are the Cosby sweaters, mullets and (mostly) shows about wheat and what you can do with it. Now if they could just get some more normal advertisers as the current crop make us look like doomsday preppers.

The NYT weighs in on Granite Flats.
http://tv.nytimes.com/2013/04/06/art...=tw-share&_r=0
And that seems like the connection point between the people of Granite Flats and the people who presumably are the intended audience for “Granite Flats”: fear bordering on paranoia. The fictional Granite Flats residents of the early ’60s are right to be afraid, because a lot of disruption is right around the corner: hippies, hard rock, black power, R-rated movies, Earth Day, soaring divorce rates, MTV, the global economy, cellphones, the Internet, “16 and Pregnant.” The people whom “Granite Flats” seems aimed at might well prefer to turn the clock back to a time before all of those things.

Wow, I sense just a smidgen of cynicism there. I'd have to guess that the people behind this new production, considering their intention and target market, would probably cut that review out and paste it proudly in their scrapbook.Originally posted by SteelBlue View Post"It's devastating, because we lost to a team that's not even in the Pac-12. It actually ended up being a pretty positive review. The critic seemed to think there was some potential for it to turn into something interesting. I am skeptical, but if they can make something watchable, I am all for it. To me, it just looks like all the other programming they have, which seems to be old reruns geared towards octogenarians.Originally posted by SteelBlue View Post

Mormons are hardly alone in not being big fans of high divorce rates, hippies, teenage pregnancy and the cable station that shows Jersey Shore. How about crack, human trafficking, Mexican drug cartels and hardcore pornography? We don't like those either, we must be total rubes.Originally posted by SteelBlue View PostPart of it is based on academic grounds. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.
Not long ago an obituary appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune that said the recently departed had "died doing what he enjoyed most—watching BYU lose."

Miami Herald with a review, largely sans snark:
http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/04/0...a-charmer.html
The result is like a oddball cross between The Goonies, The Wonder Years and Encyclopedia Brown. Granite Flats pinballs from sweet to wistful to poignant to funny. A mawkish streak sometimes briefly shows through — characters have a disconcerting tendency to speak aloud to God, dead relatives and for all I know KGB case officers listening through hidden microphones — but is quickly eclipsed by Granite Flats’ ability to stick its tongue firmly in cheek.

I watched it with my whole family. I thought it was decent, but was disappointed that they resorted to having at least 2 of the characters talking out loud to God or deceased family members to tell the back story. That seemed like a bit of a cop-out to me. My 7 year old was a bit freaked out by the (very mild) action scene (intentionally left vague to avoid spoilers) and ended up sleeping on the floor in my bedroom last night.

Christopher Lloyd, Cary Elwes Join BYUtv Family Drama ‘Granite Flats’
http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/chri...ts-1201121636/One of the grandest benefits of the enlightenment was the realization that our moral sense must be based on the welfare of living individuals, not on their immortal souls. Honest and passionate folks can strongly disagree regarding spiritual matters, so it's imperative that we not allow such considerations to infringe on the real happiness of real people.
Woot
I believe religion has much inherent good and has born many good fruits.
