this would explain why there is less fear in putting a true or redshirt freshman into a game on the lines as opposed to a cover position like DB on defense or a skill position on offense. what was andrew rich's career? was he a starter early on, or did he learn the system over a year or 2 and then come on strong? he was a beast last year and the year before, but i don't recall seeing much of him before that.

i still love hearing people talk about byu's slow white DB's when they were #25 in total team defense, and 27 in pass defense last year. Bronco is a very good defensive coach, so you have to expect that what he does with sorenson is going to be a good decision.

the reason i asked about rich's trajectory over his career is that it could be that a talented kid like rich and possibly sorenson will be utilized by bronco from the start, maybe more limited at first but ultimately playing a lot once he catches on to the system.

like predicting a NC (j/k), bronco seems to not be scared by youth in his athletes and is pretty dang gutsy.

Rich was a JC guy, I think he had one season he didn't play really and then 2 stellar seasons.

If by lines you mean the defensive side of the ball, absolutely. The offensive side terrifies me putting somebody young in with all of the reads they're responsible for making, especially when you take into consideration they're also responsible for keeping arguably the most important player on the field on the field (the QB). It's why there is such a strong correlation between success and returning starts on the offensive line. A good oline can make up for deficiencies anywhere else on the offensive side of the ball.

In terms of Rich, why he didn't play earlier was extremely frustrating. IMO, he should have been a starter from day 1 as he was more talented and appeared to produce at a higher level than guys playing ahead of him. IIRC, Rich almost left the program. Thankfully he was talked into staying.

I would have loved a backfield with Rich, Weddle, RoJo and Smith.

I agree with Sizzle on the OL. Much to learn there as well.

Rich didn't like Jaimie Hill and I think actually quit the football team and was just going to be a student. His sophmore year he did have a concussion problem when he did play and that might have slowed down his march up the depth chart. One thing I do remember was the U-BYU game when Brian Johnson moved the U through BYU like the defense was non-existant. Then Rich entered the game at FS and drilled that big white SUU transfer receiver that the U had when he went across the middle. Rich got a penalty but BYU started then getting stops. Unfortunately, IIRC the BYU qb sometime went color blind shortly thereafter and it did not matter.

I'd love to see bonco use a lot of 5 db sets with Sampson as the nickel

While I hope that Bronco uses the Nickel in passing situations, I'm not anxious to embrace adding another DB to the field unless necessary. Linebacker is clearly BYU's strength defensively and I don't really want to pull Ogletree/Kavenga/Pendelton/Van Noy off the field to add a position that has typically been a weakness for BYU. Maybe Sampson proves me wrong and DB becomes a strength for BYU, but assuming this years team is similar to most from BYU, I'm not sure I'm anxious to see that set.
