BYU can be our unofficial rival now. Our football rivalry "mistress" if you will.
Colorado will be more like our wife. "Old Faithful" that we play same time every year in a meaningful committed relationship, but that can sometimes become dull.
Our rivalry with BYU is all about passion, mixed emotions, internal conflict, and back and forth cat and mouse. Yup, BYU is pretty much a perfect mistress.

That makes sense since Gonzaga doesn't have a FB teamOriginally posted by Jeff Lebowski View PostThats not who I meant, but yeah you are correct. They are cooler than our rival too.

No, Colorado is the mistress that's getting back into Ute's life after nearly half a century. The Colorado mistress that was never accepted by it's last rival (Nebraska) after a shotgun wedding by the Big 12 and TV networks. A mistress that was never accepted because it didn't earn or deserve any respect. After a few years, Utah will also realize this while Ute fans dread or refuse to make roadtrips to that cesspool that has become Folsom Field. Utah fans will then yearn for the day when Utah played self-righteous, haughty BYU late in November rather than contemptible, despicable Colorado.Originally posted by wally View PostBYU can be our unofficial rival now. Utah fans will soon realize that the pseudo-rivalry with Colorado is a price of admission to the PAC-12. And that Colorado already has it's eye on UCLA and Cal as its newest "rival". Colorado has no inkling of the meaning of a meaningful, committed relationship - "Old Faithful" - my ass.
In the spirit of this thread, I do envy Colorado's mountains and scenery but Utah residents already have that. Colorado does have a cool mascot.
I admire U. of Utah's diverse student population (compared to BYU), not stressing out over getting accepted to the U., doing their part in garnering national respect for Utah and MWC football, and making BYU a better football program over the past couple of decades because of the quality competition.“Not the victory but the action. I disagree. Colorado is an arranged re-marriage.Originally posted by Paperback Writer View PostNo, Colorado is the mistress that's getting back into Ute's life after nearly half a century. We went for something like 50 years w/o playing colorado. If they had been our mistress we would've played them morefrequently than that.

I grew up during late 70s and 80s in a BYU household. My then stepfather was an avid BYU fan and I have many fond memories at Cougar Stadium and at the Holiday Bowl.
Once I enrolled at the U in 1993 after my mission I've been 100% Utah fan but I keep an interest in BYUs success (1996 Football, last year in Basketball, etc.)
For sure most recruits aren't familiar with how much BYU dominated the WAC but I sure remember it as it was the biggest topic of sports in the state during the early 80s before the Jazz got competitive.
I guess I envy that era from 1978-1985 BYU football memories. It was fun to win that consistently and feel a part of it as a youth. Back then the Utes had a few relatively promising seasons but they reverted to 4-7 type seasons in a pretty weak conference. I WANTED the Utes to be competitive as I went to my fair share of games at Rice stadium as well. There's just something vivid about your sports heros in your youth. I wish I could look back in fondness on that era but I can't. We have Eddie Johnson and Errol Tucker and that's about it.Last edited by SportUTE; 06-08-2011, 04:11 PM.

We're quibbling over nomenclature. Point being - once Utah has shared a bed with Colorado, Utah fans will long for BYU. Mistress, faithful wife - whatever. No school should look forward to or claim a rivalry with Colorado - the Buffalos don't deserve it and they would prefer UCLA or Cal to Utah anyway.Originally posted by wally View PostI disagree.
