McMurphy’s story was the CBS version of gang bangers tagging a media footprint. When a program like BYU, with a 65,000 seat football venue and 23,000 seat Basketball arena says “NO” loudly to CBS terms and conditions, maybe it’s time for the Beast to sit down with CBS and tell them to back off. CBS does NOT have the Beast’s best interests at heart. The way mcMurphy broke the story tells me the real reasons behind the picture. BYU danced with CBS under the MTN arrangement before, got paid a fraction of its worth for five years and said, no thank you to that arrangement, we won the right to swing all our own deals back in the Barciaga Court (Oklahoma and Georgia vs the NCAA and ABC Sports, 1983). BYU and Current Beast member Pitt were selected by the flegling young all sports network out of Bristol Connecticut to play the ifirst ever nationally televised broadcast by ESPN on September 3rd, 1984. That road win launched BYU into the hearts and minds of fans all over the country (Mormon and non-Mormon alike). History means something to ESPN. BYU played UTAH in the first ever nationally televised game on Thanksgiving Day on NBC back in 1953. BYU’s Philo T. Farnsworth INVENTED sound and video coordinated CRT projection Imaging Device (the TV) back in 1928. BYU and TV go back to the beginning of the entire inductry. History means something. If BYU feels it should have it’s cake and eat it too, perhaps it is because BYU was there with so many critical firsts. Getting all the sports into the Big 12 would have been worth BYU doing pretty much whatever it took. Football-only to the Big East would make scheduling November a lot easier but otherwise I really don't see the point. Maybe a basketball home-and-home scheduling deal with the Big East would have been nice if something like that could have been arranged -- bringing some Big East teams into the Marriott Center would be awesome.
If BYU is undefeated this season they would be in a BCS bowl anyway I think. The football schedule will get better I hope and I think ESPN can continue to help with scheduling. I have no problem with turning down the football-only Big East deal though.Comment

The quoted section is interesting history, particularly on Thanksgiving, but the tone makes me worry about any advice that might be offered. I have no idea if any was because I stopped reading after this:

BYU gave an ultimatum when the Big East indicated Comcast was coming to the table. The University took the position that its history with Comcast was so negative that they would not participate in a league that had a contract with Comcast unless they could keep their entire existing television contracts. This position was as non-negotiable as the Sunday Play issue and tanked the negotiations. Interestingly, this is what I heard from BYU's side. Sure, one side said it was because we were unreasonable and the GC was a "piece of work" and the other side said we had great reason and the GC was properly representing BYU's interests under the direction of the BOT. How so? Each side has its interests to protect. It sounds like once BYU found out Comcast was the likely broadcast partner, it moved to protect its interest based on past experience with Comcast.
