The way I see it we have two rivals now. And you still have us, and you could maybe add Idaho or say San Jose St. if you really wanted to.

LOLZ. Very true, when you are closing in on a decade of blowout wins you can't say it is much of a rivalry.

How about we just count our new basketball-only rival in the Zags? That way, we have a moderately-good football rival and a good basketball rival.

That's fine. For a moment I feared you were going to have me saying "I can't quit you!"

Seriously, all living Utah and BYU fans will have to pass away before the change in conference affiliation has any effect on the rivalry, er, rivarly, and even then it ain't going away.

I disagree. The game will be intense and meaningful this year, however as the years go on Utah will learn that the Pac is about going to the Rose Bowl and winning or losing to BYU doesn't have any impact on that. It will become a regular non-conf game played in September.

If BYU remains independent then it will likely hold more meaning to BYU for the short term. However if BYU gets into the Big 12 or some future conference they will establish new team/s that will mean more to them.

I see what you are saying but I disagree. Florida-Florida State seems to have held on as a rivalry despite those teams going their separate ways. Ute fans claiming they will no longer care about BYU are simply trying to diss BYU and are (ironically) showing how much they actually do care. We'll still want to beat each other. What will be missing is truly having something at stake other than bragging rights.

It's not new, but it is rekindled. These teams played 57 times from 1903 to 1962.

I am looking forward to trading smack with some Buffs here. I know the Buff program will recover from its near death experience and return to national prominence soon.

I am an optimist almost to a fault. I want the Buffs to be a worthy Ute rival.

Colorado doesn't support their athletic programs very well, particularly football. I also want them to grow back to their former strength, but I doubt it will happen.

Surely your optimism leads you to understand while some sort of a rivalry will develop on the playing field, the visceral hatred between fanbases will never materialize in anything resembling that between the two intermingled, intermarried, (and each would call the other inbred) Wasatch Front fanbases.

We will develop fun rivalry relationships in the PAC-12 but I don't expect a Utes vs Cougars, Red Sox vs Yankees, Lakers vs Celtics, Jews vs Palestinians, (indeed a CU vs. Nebraska) style conflict over any of them.

Haven't you heard? You Ute fans don't care one bit about BYU anymore. Not one bit.
